We learned from the previous lesson that each organ system of the body has their
own specific functions. Communication among organ system is important if they are to
work together as a team. They must be able to respond to each other to perform a specific
task to normally keep our body in balance. In this lesson we will explore how the different
organ systems work together to accomplish their task in order to maintain our bodily
functions well.
The muscular and skeletal systems work together to support and move the body.
The bones of the skeletal system are responsible for our body’s framework and serve as
protection to most internal body organs while the muscles are the ones which give shape
to the body. The joints help attached bones to another bone for flexibility and movement
of the body.

body. The digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates solid
wastes.
The illustration below shows how the respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems
work together.

The respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems work together in order for the
nutrients to be delivered throughout the body. The respiratory system supplies oxygen to
the digestive system in order to breakdown food. At the same time the respiratory system
provides oxygen for the heart to function well. It is then the circulatory system’s
responsibility to distribute the oxygen and nutrients supplied by the respiratory and
digestive systems to the different parts of the body.

lungs carbon dioxide
Digestion process starts when the food we eat is broken down and transformed
into nutrients as it passes through the different digestive organs. The blood of the
circulatory system transports these nutrients to the cells throughout the body. At the same
time, as the blood delivers nutrients, it collects wastes from the different parts of the body
for kidneys and other excretory organs to filter and remove waste materials.
What happens when one organ system fails to perform its function?
The organ systems work together to keep the normal balance of our body, however
when one fails to function properly, the other body systems are affected. For example,
when kidneys fail to filter blood a person may have difficulty urinating and may result to
other ailments because of non-removal of waste materials in the blood. Furthermore,
problems in blood circulation can lead to swelling because of water and fluid retention. In
cases where there is a problem in the digestive system, this could lead to a person’s
weight loss because of the difficulty in obtaining nutrients from food.

Activity 1 – Arrange the process
Directions: Arrange the following statements according to the process on how the
respiratory, digestive and circulatory system work together. Number each step
according to the sequence it occurs. Use numbers 1-5.
____Food is liquefied and digested into forms that the cells of the body can use.
Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct words. Choose your answers from the word
bank below.

Activity 3 – Choose wisely
Directions: Study each statement. Identify the organ systems that work together to
perform the tasks. Encircle the letter of the best answer.
1. The food we eat breaks into smaller pieces that are transformed into nutrients and
distributed to the different body parts to keep the it healthy.
A. Digestive and Circulatory System
B. Excretory and Integumentary System
C. Muscular and Skeletal System
D. Respiratory and Circulatory System
2. As gas exchange takes place, oxygen is then transported into the entire body
through the blood.
A. Digestive and Circulatory System
B. Excretory and Integumentary System
C. Muscular and Skeletal System
D. Respiratory and Circulatory System
4. Food transformed into nutrients then circulated through the tiny capillaries and
blood.
A. Digestive and Circulatory System
B. Excretory and Integumentary System
C. Muscular and Skeletal System
D. Respiratory and Circulatory System
5. They both release liquid wastes to maintain chemical balance in the body.
A. Digestive and Circulatory System
B. Excretory and Integumentary System
C. Muscular and Skeletal System
D. Respiratory and Circulatory System

Activity 4 – Is it true
Direction: Read each statement. Write the word True on the blank if the statement is
correct and False if it is not correct.
_______1. Organ systems work together to maintain the normal balance of the body.
_______2. The failure of one organ system may cause failure to other organ systems.
_______3. The transportation of nutrients is carried by the digestive system.
_______4. When blood is filtered by the kidneys, the waste product is expelled as urine.
_______5. The skin excretes excess water.
_______6. The circulatory system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients.
_______7. The lungs remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the blood.
_______8. The skin excretes water, urea, salt and other wastes through sweat.
_______9. Circulatory system is the body’s transport system.
_______10.The respiratory system carries oxygen to the lungs and removes carbon
dioxide from the blood.
