Math 20a Final Exam May 9, 2012

Instructions: Read the problems carefully before you start thinking or writing. You must justify your
answers; this might mean showing your calculations, or quoting definitions/results/formulas from in
class. Calculators are not permitted; if you get an expression like 25/2 , just leave it in that form. Be
sure to sign your exam booklet. There is a total of 200 points.

1. [18 points] Let f (x, y) = yz tan (πx/y).
(a) Compute the (first order) partial derivatives of f , and evaluate them at x = 1, y = 4, z = 1.
(b) Use (a) to describe the plane passing through (1, 4, 1) which is tangent to the level surface

(x, y, z) : f (x, y, z) = f (1, 4, 1) .
2. [18 points] An airplane is located at position (4π, 3π, 1) and is flying over Los Angeles with velocity
(999, 998, −1). The density of fog is given by
g(x, y, z) = e−z + 2e−1 sin(x − y) .
(a) How fast is the density changing for an observer in the airplane? Is it increasing or decreasing?
(b) Find the unit vector in which direction the airplane should proceed to decrease the fog density
most rapidly.
3. [18 points] A particle moves in the plane so that at time t its velocity vector is
r0 (t) = (t cos t, t sin t) .
It is known that the particle was at the origin at t = 0.
(a) Find the distance traveled by the particle between t = 0 and t = 2π, that is, the length of the curve
parametrized by r(t), 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π.
(b) Find the position of the particle at t = 2π. [Hint: integration by parts.]
4. [16 points] For each of the following, either explain why the limit does not exist or give the value of
the limit and explain why the limit exists.
y − x2 xy
(a) lim (b) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x+y (x,y)→(0,0) cos(xy)
5. [18 points] (a) Find all the critical points of
h(x, y) = (y 4 − 12 y 2 + 1)(x3 − 3x) .
(b) Determine which of the critical points are local maxima, local minima, or saddle points.
6. [24 points] The general manager of Waltham Nuts and Bolts Company noticed that whenever his
company produces b tons of bolts and n tons of nuts, the revenue is equal to
r(b, n) = b2 + n2 − 6b − 8n + 25
thousand dollars. Assume that the company has to produce at least a ton of each bolts and nuts (b ≥ 1,
n ≥ 1) and not more than total 8 tons of both bolts and nuts (b + n ≤ 8). How many tons each of
bolts and nuts should be produced to (a) maximize (b) minimize the revenue?

x3/2 + y 3/2 that lies above the region

8. [15 points] Find the area of the portion of the surface z = 3
defined by 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.
9. [16 points] Let S be the solid obtained by rotation of the “triangle”

10. [20 points] (a) Find a potential function for the vector field
G = (x + 2xz)i + (2yz − y 2 )j + (x2 + y 2 + 2z)k .
