Lesson Title Speech Communication

 This lesson focuses on the basic concepts of Speech


Communication, Public Speaking, and Preparing a Speech.
Description  The lesson emphasizes the step by step process in writing a speech.
 The lesson also discusses the different techniques used in preparing a
of the Lesson
speech, speech preparations, and types of speeches.
 Finally, the lesson will develop the student’s skills in Public Speaking
which is a tool in their future careers.

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to meet the following intended learning


outcomes:
Intended  Knowledge: Recognize the process of Speech Communication, its
Learning nature, and Ways in Public Speaking.
Outcomes  Values: Emphasize the importance of having self-confidence, think
before speak, and empathy to others in Public Speaking.
 Skills: Apply and perform Public Speaking skills using various media.

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:


 define Speech Communication as a tool for one’s career;
Targets/  recognize the application of Public Speaking in sending ideas and
messages to large group of people;
Objectives
 write a speech using techniques in speech writing;
 value the importance of self confidence in speaking to people; and
 perform Public Speaking Skills using various media.

SPEECH COMMUNICATION

Nature of Speech Communication


1. Speech is a process of sending ideas to the listener by using verbal
process and structured speech.

2. Speech Communication, in a same manner is a process of


communicating to a large group of people/ audience using a
speech.

3. Public is the most often audience of Speech communication


wherein it is referred to as Public Speaking in which the speaker
sends the messages and to the large number of audience in a one
way process. Except from some occasions like debate, open
forum/discussion or Symposiums and others.

4. Generally, Public Speaking is a communication process of sending


messages to a large number of audience using a prepared speech.

Types of Speech Communication with Different/Various Purposes


1. Informative Communication- Involves giving rather than asking. As
an informative communicator, you want your receivers to pay
attention and understand, but not to change their behavior. By
sharing information, ignorance is reduced or eliminated.

Informative speech – also known as Expository speech. Speech


giving information about things in the world. Detailing, explaining for
the average persons and using visual aids (power point, diagrams,
charts etc.) are helpful tips.

2. Persuasive Communication- This communication is art of gaining


favorable considerations for the speaker.

Persuasive Speech – is a speech designed to move people to do or


not to do. It is delivered to convinced people to accept the
speaker’s point of view. It is influential speech. Living on what you
say, speaking with logic and emotions are useful tips.

3. Argumentative Communication- Heavy reasoning, Aristotle stated


that the cause of a person’s argument are logos (logic), pathos
(sadness), ethos (beliefs) and mythos (illusion).

Argumentative Speech – usually debate speech. Presents


arguments and rational reasoning.

4. Entertainment Communication- A speech that makes a viewpoint in


a creative and organized use of the speaker’s wit. This is a speech to
amuse people, usually given in an occasion where people is in light
mood. This is not a comedy speech, still it must be informative and
persuasive.

An Entertainment Speech is given to amuse people with a light


mood and atmosphere, usually in an occasion or SPEECH FOR
OCCASSIONS. The speaker must have the attitude of being
humorous but still, must deliver the entertainment speech
informatively.

Methods of Delivering a Speech

Reading Delivering a speech from a text written word for


from a manuscriptword. This is best for beginners.
Delivering a speech using good memory. Needs
Memorized time to memorized the speech, sometimes the
Speech speaker forget the next and the speech is in robotic
form (no expressions and not from heart).
Delivering a speech without advance preparation.
Use at the “Spur of the moment”, unrehearsed and
Impromptu Speech
adlibbed. Relax and don’t be in a hurry. Use IADC –
Issue, Advantages, Disadvantages, Conclusion.
Using only notes and delivering the speech by
formulating the ideas and sentences while
Extemporaneous speaking. Teachers and lecturers often use.
Speech Compare to impromptu, extemporaneous receives
the topic in advanced with minutes to formulate
the ideas.

Techniques in Public Speaking


Techniques
Avoid stage fright.
Prepare your speech.
Maintain eye contact.
Use powerful voice.
Show confidence in delivering your speech.
Be stage microphone wise.
Allow yourself to breath.
Time is important in your speech.
Make goals in your speech
Use gestures while explaining, emphasizing, and getting to a point.

Reminders for Preparing a Speech

1. Decide your method of speech.


2. Have a Perception – observe the venue and the audience. Be
aware that making a speech is a public.
3. Have a positive attitude. Avoid stage freight, tensions and
distractions. Relax, a self-esteem and set your goal.
4. Check posture.
5. Prepare the outline of your speech.
6. Write your speech. Once you write something, you can remember it.
7. Consider the type of audience.
8. Use metaphors in your speech (ex. Raining cats and dogs, time flies,
wolf in sheep’s clothing, barking up the wrong tree).
9. Avoid fillers (ex. I think, I believe that, In my own opinion, According
to what I’ve heard, I guess…)
10. Use parallel structure- words with similar meaning, synonyms, equal
meaning.
11. Observe correct mechanics/ grammar.
12. Use sure vocabularies – vocabulary words that your audience can
get.
13. Rehearse.
14. Be microphone smart!
