Powers of Ten and Scientific Notation - Step-by-Step Lesson

1. Write 5840000 in scientific notation.

Explanation:

A quick look at scientific notation format:

2.31 × 104

The first factor must be at least 1 and less than 10.

The second factor must be a power of 10.

Move the decimal point to the left until the number is between 1 and tenth
place. Count how many places you move the decimal point.

5840000 → 5.8

You moved the decimal point 6 places to the left. The power of ten is 106.

5840000= 5.84 × 106

Answer is: 5.84 × 106

Scientific Notation Word Problems - Step-by-Step Lesson

Lesson 1 Word Problem:

In August 2001, there were approximately 2 million people living in Apple

City. In August 2011, that population grew to 6 million people. How many
more people lived in Apple City in 2011 in comparison to 2001? Write your
answer in scientific notation.

Explanation:

We need to find the difference between the two population sizes.

First we write the population of 2011, 6,000,0000 and the population of

2001, 2,000,0000.

To find the increased population we have to subtract the population of 2001

from 2011.

6,000,0000 – 2,000,0000 = 4,000,000

In scientific notation we move the decimal point as many times as we need

to until we get the non-zero number in the ones place. It takes six moves to
the left to reach 4.0. The ten is raised to the sixth power.

It’s written as: 4.0 × 106

Scientific Notation Word Problems – Homework 1

Example: In 2010, there were approximately 6 million girls living

in Orange City. In 2011, the population was down to 4 million
girls. How many girls lived in Orange City in 2011 in comparison
to 2010? Write your answer in scientific notation.

Step 1: First we write the population of girls in 2011 = 6,000,000

and the population in 2010 = 4,000,000.

Step 2: To find the value of the increased population we have to

subtract the population of 2010 from 2011.

6,000,000 – 4,000,000 = 2,000,000

In scientific notation, we move the decimal point as many times

Scientific Notation Word Problems – Homework 2

Example: Last year, the number of trees in Corn City was 2.6 x 103.
The number of trees was 3.3 × 104 in Lake City. Which city had more
trees and by how much?

Step 1: Number of trees in Corn City - 2.6 x 103

Number of trees in Lake City – 3.3 x 104

We can see that Lake City is set to the higher power of ten and is
therefore the town with the larger tree population.

Step 2: Get them into the same power of ten to make it workable. A
nice way to do that is to move the decimal one to the right on Lake
City’s population. This results in losing a power of ten.

33.0 x 103 - 2.6 x 103

Since they are multiplied by the same power,

just subtract the root numbers.

= 30.4 x 103

Answer: So the answer is 3.04 x 104.

Complete the following problems:

of water? Write this number in scientific
notation.

2. If a box contain 4 x 108 pins, 4. If we suppose the volume of

how many pins are there in 5 the river is approximately 2 x

times, write the volume of the

Scientific Notation Word Problems– Homework 3

Example: Suppose there are 3 × 106 fish in every 2 km area of sea.

How many fish are there in 6 km of sea?

Step 1: Fish in 2 km area of sea = 3 × 106

Step 2: To know the amount of fish in 1 km area of sea we have to

divide fish in 2 km by 2.

= = 1.5 x 106

Step 3: Now we have value of fish in one kilometer, so to get the

amount of fish in 6 km we have to multiply it by 6.

= 1.5 x 106 x 6 = 9 x 106

Answer: In 6 km there are 9 x 1012 fish.

Complete the following problems:

between Earth and Venus is 4.1 x

Scientific Notation Addition and Subtraction - Step-by-Step Lesson

Find the sum of:

9 × 105 + 4.5 × 106

Explanation:

9 × 105 + 4.5 × 106

The first thing that you want to do is to get all of the powers of ten to the
same exponent. Since these are all powers of ten you can easily slide up
and down by just moving the decimal point.

= 0.9 × 106 + 4.5 × 106

To make all the exponents to the power 106 we just need to slide the
decimal point of 9 to the left once.

= (0.9 + 4.5) × 106 Now, we just need to combine the constants.

= 5.4 × 106

Graphing Proportional Relationships - Step-by-Step Lesson

Weston and Jaden go for long bike rides. The graph below represents
Weston's trip over the period of 2 months. The equation below represents
Jaden’s consistent pace. Which rider moves at a faster pace?

Weston Trip Jaden’s Pace

Miles Travelled

y = 20x
40
30 x = hours

20 y is miles
10

0 5 10 15 20 25
Hours on Trip

Explanation:

Since both paces are constant and proportional, we can compare

the data by simply comparing 2 or more scenarios.

Weston: Weston covers 10 miles in 5 hours.

Weston covers 30 miles in 15 hours.

In both cases (10/5 and 30/15) Weston is at a pace of 2 miles per hour.

If we put Jaden's bike data to the test

Jaden Bike: Using the equation: y = 20x we can see that Jaden is
moving at a substantially faster pace.

In 5 hours, Jaden will cover (20 x 5) 100 miles.

In 15 hours, Jaden will cover (20 x 15) 300 miles.

Jaden is moving at (300/15, 100/5) 20 miles per hour.

Using Similar Triangles to Find Slope - Step-by-Step Lesson

Lesson 1 Find Slope Problem:

1. a. Find the slope of the line using the similar triangles as a guide.
b. Write the equation of the line.

Explanation:
a. Slope is a ratio between the change in y and the change in x (y/x)
(rise/run).
Both triangles rise 2 places (y) and run 3 places (x).
So the slope is 2/3.

b. The equation for a straight line is: y = mx + b

m = slope, b = y-intercept
The slope we determined is (2/3).

The Y intercept is where the line crosses the Y axis. Looking at the graph it
crosses at -4. So the final equation will look like:

y= x -4

Step 1: The standard form for the equation of a line is Ax + By = C.

A, B and C are real numbers and x and y are variables.
Step 2: To find the equation of a line this formula is used:
(y – y2) = m(x –x2). Both x and y remain variables. The slope, m, will
be a real number as well as (x2,y2). Recall the formula for slope. m =

Linear Equations in One Variable- Step-by-Step Lesson

Lesson 1 Linear Equations:

a) How many solutions does this equation have?

12 r – 4 = 11 r

a. no solution
b. one solution
c. infinitely many solutions

Explanation:
We know that if solving an equation yields a statement that is false, like
5=3, then the equation has no solution.
If we can produce an equation solving a statement that is true for a single
value, like x=2, the equation will have one solution.
An equation statement that is always true, like 2=2, has many solutions.

12r – 4 = 11r
-4 = -r
4=r
The statement 4 = r has a single value.
So, the equation has one solution.

Line A and B has the following points:

Line A: (4,5) and (-4,2)

Line B: (5,8) and (-5, -5)

Find the point where the two lines intersect.

Explanation:

What we can do is find the equation of both lines. If we then set them equal
to each other, we can find the x value of where they both meet. We can
then plug that x value into either equation to find the y value of where they
meet.

Step 1: Find the equation of each line.
