Jss2 Area of Plane Figures

The area of plane figures is the amount of space within a 2D shape, measured in square units. Various formulas for calculating the area of different shapes, such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles, are provided. Examples illustrate how to apply these formulas to find the area of specific shapes.

Definition of Area of plane figures:

The area is the amount of space within the perimeter of a 2D shape. It is measured in
square units, such as cm², m², etc. You can think of the area as the area inside a given
shape or space. It refers to how much space is taken up. The larger the shape, the larger
the area and perimeter of the shape will be.

Triangle
Square
Area = ½ × b × h
Area = a2
b = base
a = length of
h = vertical
side
height
Parallelogram
Rectangle
Area = b × h
Area = w × h
b = base
w = width
h = vertical
h = height
height
Trapezoid Circle
Area = ½(a+b) × Area = π × r2
h Circumference
h = vertical =2×π×r
height r = radius
Sector
Area = ½ × r2 ×
θ
r = radius
θ = angle in
radians

Example: What is the area of this rectangle?

The formula is:

Area = w × h

w = width

h = height
We know w = 5 and h = 3, so:

Area = 5 × 3 = 15

Example:

What is the area of a circle where

Radius = r = 3

Area = π × r2

= π × 32

= π × (3 × 3)

= 3.14159… × 9
= 28.27 (to 2 decimal
places)

Example:

What is the area of a triangle where

Height = h = 12

Base = b = 20

Area = ½ × b × h = ½ × 20 × 12 = 120
