Assignment (11)
1. What is the difference between conductors, semiconductors, and insulators?
2. Make a comprehensive comparison between intrinsic and extrinsic (p-type and n-type)
semiconductors.
3. Determine the forward voltage and forward current for the diode in Figure 1-(a) and
(b) for each of the diode models. Also find the voltage across the limiting resistor in
each case. Assume 𝑟𝑑′ = 10 V.

4. For circuit in Figure 2: Assuming the practical model and the transformer has a 120 V rms across the
primary.
a. Determine the peak output voltage,
b. Show the voltage waveforms across a secondary winding and across RL,
c. Find the average value of the output voltage,
d. What PIV rating is required for the diodes?
e. What is the peak current through each diode?

6. Determine the peak forward current through each diode in Figure 4. And determine the output
voltage waveform for each circuit in Figure. Assuming the practical model.

7. Describe the output waveform of each circuit in Figure 5. Assume the RC time constant is much
greater than the period of the input. Assuming the practical model.

8. A certain full-wave voltage doubler has input peak voltage 20 V. What is the output voltage? Draw
the circuit, indicating the output terminals and PIV rating for the diode. Assuming the ideal model.
9. A 20 V peak sinusoidal voltage is applied to the circuit in Figure 6 in place of the dc source. Draw
the output waveform. Use the parameter values established in Problem 9 in Assignment (6).
10. Determine how to connect the seven-segment display in Figure 7 to display “5.” The maximum
continuous forward current for each LED is 30 mA and a +5 V dc source is to be used.
