Answer all questions


1. A manufacturer of electric batteries claims that the average capacity of a certain
type of battery that the company produces is at least 140 ampere-hours with a
standard deviation of 2.66 ampere-hours. An independent sample of 20
batteries gave a mean of 138.47 ampere-hour. Test at 5% significance level
that the average capacity has been overstated. [5]

2. A company manufacturing automobile tyres finds that tyre-life is normally


distributed with a mean of 40 000 km and a standard deviation of 3 000 km. It
is believed that a change in the production process will result in a better product
and the company has developed a new tyre. A sample of 100 new tyres has
been selected. The company has found that the mean life of these new tyres is
40 900 km. Can it be concluded that the new tyre is significantly better than the
old one, using the significant level of 0.01? [5]

3. The average age of 10 professors selected randomly in university A is 46.672


with a standard deviation of 8.53. The average age of 10 professors selected
randomly in university B is 47.531 with a standard deviation of 7.83. Does the
data indicate that university A has older professors than university B, on
average? Test at a 5% level of significance. [5]

4. To compare customer satisfaction levels of two competing cable television


companies 174 customers of Company 1 and 355 customers of Company 2

were randomly selected and were asked to rate their cable companies on a
five-point scale, with 1 being least satisfied and 5 most satisfied. The survey
results are summarized below

Test at the 1% level of significance whether the data provide sufficient evidence
to conclude that Company 1 has a higher mean satisfaction rating than does

5. Suppose that a random sample of 12 students were given a diagnostic test
before studying a particular module and then again after completing the
module. Test at 5% level of significance if there is improvement in test scores
from the data given below. [7]

6. A health administrator wants to compare the number of unoccupied beds for


three hospitals in the same city. The administrator randomly selects 14 different
days from the records of each hospital and enters the number of unoccupied
beds for each day. Use the Kruskal-Wallis H test to determine whether the
median number of unoccupied beds differs. [10]

7. A random sample of 395 people were surveyed and each person was asked to
report the highest educational level they obtained. The data results are shown
in the table below. Test if gender and educational level are dependent at 5%
