Mechanisms of Machinery: Assignment -2 and submission date: 16/8/2015 E.

Position Analysis
1. For the mechanism shown below:
a. Position all the links, as link 2 is rotated 600 clockwise and analytically determine
the displacement of link 4.
b.Analytically position the inks into the configuration that places link 4 in its limiting
position. Determine the maximum displacement (stroke) of link 4.

2. A crank – rocker linkage has a 100 mm frame, a 25 mm crank, a 90 mm coupler, and a 75

mm rocker. Draw the linkage and find the maximum and minimum values of the
transmission angle. Locate both toggle positions and compute the corresponding crank
angles and transmission angles.
Ans. (γmin = 53.130, γmax = 98.10; at θ = 400, γ = 59.10; at θ = 228.60, γ = 89.10).

3. The offset slider – crank mechanism shown below is driven by rotating crank 2. Using any
appropriate method write an equation for the position of the slider 4 as a function of θ2 or
cos θ2. Take L1 = 1.0 cm, L2 = 2.5 cm, L3 = 7.0 cm. Ans. [L4 =
2.50 cos θ2 + (36.75 + 6.25 cos2 θ2)1/2 cm].

4. The figure below shows a non-Grashof fourbar linkage that is driven from link O2A. All
dimensions are in centimeters (cm).
a) Find the transmission angle at the position shown.
b) Find the toggle positions in terms of angle AO2O4.
a) Find the maximum and minimum transmission angles over its range of
motion by graphical techniques.

5. The figure below shows a fourbar linkage used in a power loom to drive a comb-like reed
against the thread, “beating it up” into the cloth. Determine its Grashof condition and its
minimum and maximum transmission angles to graphical accuracy.

Velocity analysis
1. In the following position of the hand operated metal shear:
a) Draw the kinematic Diagram.
b) Determine the velocity of the shear blade when the handle rotates clockwise at a
rate of 2 rad/sec.
c) Determine the velocity of the point of interest X when the handle rotates clockwise
at a rate of 2 rad/sec.

2. The mechanism shown in the figure below is driven by link 2 at ω2 = 45 rad/s, CCW. Find
the angular velocities of links 3 and 4.
Take O2O4 = 10 cm, O2A = 4 cm, AB = 10 cm, O4B = 12 cm, and θ2 = 1200.

3. Link 2 of the mechanism shown in the figure below is driven at an angular velocity of 36
rad/s, CW. Find the angular velocity of link 3 and the velocity of point B.
Take AO2 = 5 cm, O4O2 = 7 cm, AB = O4B = 8 cm, and θ2 = 300.

1. For the power hacksaw in Figure below at the instant shown, the 1.75-in. crank rotates
clockwise at 60 rpm. and accelerates at 40 rad/s2. Use the relative acceleration method to
graphically determine the linear
velocity and linear acceleration of the saw blade

2. The motor on the car wash sprayer in Figure below rotates counterclockwise at a constant
rate of 120 rpm. At the instant when , use the relative acceleration method to graphically
determine the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the nozzle arm.

3. For the sewing machine linkage in Figure below, at the instant when, the drive wheel
rotates counterclockwise at a constant 200 rpm. Use the relative acceleration method to
graphically determine the linear velocity and linear acceleration of the needle
