Quantum Efficiency and LED Power

The document discusses internal quantum efficiency (η) in LEDs, defining it as the ratio of radiative recombination rate to total recombination rate. It explains the relationship between radiative and non-radiative lifetimes, and how these factors influence optical power generation and external quantum efficiency. The equations provided illustrate how to calculate emitted power from LEDs based on these efficiencies.

Quantum Efficiency and LED power

 The internal quantum efficiency (n-)is the fraction of the electron hole pairs that recombine
radiatively or it is the ratio of radiative recombination rate to the total recombination rate.

If n are the excess carriers, then radiative life time, τ r= and

The internal quantum efficiency is given as -Type equation here .

The recombination time of carriers in active region is t. It is also known as bulk

recombination life time.

τ τ r τ nr

Therefore internal quantum efficiency is given

as-

η τ
∫ ¿= τ ¿

If the current injected into the LED is I and q is electron charge then total number of

recombinations per second is-

I
Rr + R nr =

Therefore,

Rr =η 1

The external quantum efficiency is used to calculate the emitted power. It is defined as the ratio of
photons emitted from LED to the number of photons generated internally. It is given by equation,

1
η ext = 2
n ( n+ 1 )
The optical output power emitted from LED is given as –

P=ηext . P∫ ¿¿
