Module 3

A Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagram illustrates the transformation of austenite over time as temperature decreases, making it suitable for engineering applications. To construct a CCT diagram for eutectoid steel, samples are heated above the lower critical temperature and cooled at constant rates to determine the start and finish points of pearlite transformation. By plotting these points, curves are formed, resulting in the CCT diagram for eutectoid steel.

CCT Diagram

 The diagram that illustrates the transformation of austenite as a function of time for continuously
changing (decreasing) temperature is a Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagram.
 CCT diagrams are generally more appropriate for engineering applications as components are cooled
(air cooled, furnace cooled, quenched etc.) from a processing temperature as this is more economic
than transferring to a separate furnace for an isothermal treatment.

Determination of CCT diagram for Eutectoid Steel:

 For the construction of CCT diagram for a eutectoid steel, a large number of small samples are heated
above the lower critical temperature (A1) to get a completely austenitic structure.
 From this temperature, specimens are cooled at a constant cooling rate and points corresponding to
start and finish of pearlite are obtained.
 By repeating the same process at various cooling rates, different sets of start and end points for
pearlitic transformation are obtained.
 On joining start and end points, two curves, similar to those in TTT curves, corresponding to start and
end of transformation are obtained. Thus a CCT diagram is obtained. The CCT diagram for eutectoid
steel is shown below.
