Abstract
In this report, we discuss thermocouple characteristics and vary the temperature to record
measurement. It includes details of the experimental procedure, results, and conclusions
noticing voltage and temperature relationships in two separate exercises.

EXPERIMENT 1

Experiment 1

1.1 Objectives
The objective of this experiment is to describe and demonstrate the characteristics of a
thermocouple, verifying the results using a multimeter and comparing them with the calculated
device.

1.2 Used tool

• F.A.C.E.T. base unit
• TRANSDUCER FUNDAMENTALS circuit board
• Multimeter

1.3 Procedure
1. Turn on the oven and set it to a specific temperature (e.g., 40C). 2. Set your
multimeter to measure Vdc and connect the leads across the output of the
instrumentation amplifier. 3. Connect the +OUT and − OUT terminals from the
reference circuit to +IN and − IN terminals of the instrumentation amplifier. 4. Adjust
the instrumentation amplifier’s gain to 100. 5. Calculate the expected voltage output
using the formula:
IA OUT = α × T × Av

where α = 51 µV/C and Av = 100. 6. Record the voltage at different

temperature set points: 35C, 45C, and 50C..
1.4 Results

The calculated and measured results were very close, showing the calibration was correct.
Small differences happened because of measurement conditions or component tolerances.
The circuit was calibrated successfully and worked as expected, giving accurate voltage
outputs for each temperature.

Comparison of calculated and measured voltages at various temperatures.

35 178.5 179.3 0.8

45 229.5 225.0 4.5
59 255.0 248.0 7.0

1.5 Conclusion
This experiment provided valuable information about the operation of the thermocouple and how it
changes the voltage due the temperature change, we can notice that the thermos couple is nearby linear
specially for short temperature ranges, the thermos couple can be calibrated to insure accurate results, it’s
linear response in short is one of the most important advantages, also the thermocouple have a wide range
of temperature input.

EXPERIMENT 2

7
Experiment 2: Temperature Measurement

1.1 Objectives
explain the use of a thermocouple in temperature measurement applications and determine the
relationship between temperature and output voltage.

1.2Procedure
1.Move the meter lead to AMP OUT in the thermocouple circuit block. 2. Add a connection
from IA OUT in the instrumentation amplifier circuit block to AMP IN in the thermocouple
circuit block. 3. Use the formula:

Rearranged to calculate output voltage for a given temperature:

𝑉𝑂𝑈𝑇 = (𝑇 − 30) × 0.5

4. Perform calculations for the output voltage at 35C, 45C, and 50C. 5. Observe the OVEN
ON LED to ensure the oven stabilizes at each set point. 6. Insert a two-post connector in the
HEATER position to simulate temperature variations and measure output voltage changes.
7. Adjust the REF potentiometer as needed.
2.3 Results
The experiment provided data to verify the calibration and operation of the thermocouple
circuit. The output voltages were calculated and measured for several set temperatures
(35°C, 40°C, 45°C, and 50°C). The results showed close between the calculated and
measured values, making sure of the circuit's accuracy.
Comparison of calculated and measured voltages at different temperature set points.

Temperature (C) (V) Measured Voltage (V)
35 2.5 2.51
45 7.5 7.44
59 10.0 9.94
2.4 Conclusion

This experiment showed how to calibrate and use a thermocouple circuit for temperature
measurement. The calibration linked temperature to output voltage using the formula

𝑉{𝑂𝑈𝑇} = (𝑇 − 30) × 0.5

8
To make sure results are accurate. Adjusted the CAL and REF pots to make sure we get right
operations.

The thermistor's role in having stable reference temperature was important, as any change could
cause errors. The instrumentation amplifier amplified the thermocouple's small signal to have
higher sensitivity.

Measured and calculated voltages were very close, proving the circuit's accuracy. The test also
showed how removing the reference voltage affects the output, showing the need for stability.
Overall, the experiment resulted a simple and effective method for temperature measurement.
