What Are Units of Time?

Time forms a significant part of our everyday lives. The standard unit of time, according
to the International System of Units (SI units), is the ‘second’. Minutes and hours are also
commonly used when referring to units of time. The key number when working with seconds
and minutes is 60. Larger units, including hours and days, relate to the time it takes for the
Earth to spin and orbit the Sun. Therefore, these larger units have their own rates of time to
consider.
Key Units of Time

60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
365 days = 1 year

The following chart can be used to convert between key units of time.

÷ 60 ÷ 60 ÷ 24

seconds minutes hours days

× 60 × 60 × 24

Example 1
Use the chart above to complete the following questions.
a. Convert 35 minutes to seconds.
To convert minutes to seconds, we multiply by 60.

35 × 60 = 2100 seconds.
b. Convert 12 days to hours.
To convert days to hours, we multiply by 24.

12 × 24 = 288 hours.

c. Convert 8 minutes to hours.
To convert minutes to hours, we divide by 60.

8 ÷ 60 = 0.1333... hours.
d. Convert 60 hours to days.
To convert hours to days, we divide by 24.

60 ÷ 24 = 2.5 days.
e. Convert 12 hours to seconds.
To convert hours to seconds, we multiply by 60 then multiply by 60 again.
This is because we need to first convert hours to minutes before changing to
seconds.
12 × 60 × 60 = 12 × 3600
= 43 200 seconds.

12-Hour Time
You may be familiar with the use of the terms ‘am’ and ‘pm’. These stand for “ante meridiem”
and “post meridiem”. These terms divide each day into two parts: for all hours from midnight
and before midday, am is used; and for all hours from midday and before midnight, pm is
used. All 12-hour times are written as three or four digits, with a colon separating each pair
of digits. For example, 3:45am and 12:25pm.

24-Hour Time
For most digital clocks and in certain circumstances, such as the military, 24-hour time is
used. 24-hour time treats each day as one 24-hour part, rather than two 12-hour parts (as
there are 24 hours in each day). 24-hour time shows the number of hours and minutes
which have passed since midnight. All 24-hour times are written as four digits with a colon
separating each pair of digits, for example, 03:45 and 12:25. Do not write am or pm next to a
time written in 24-hour format.

Example 2
Answer the following questions.
a. Write 4:15pm in 24-hour time.
4pm is 16 hours after midnight.

Therefore, 4:15pm = 16:15

b. Write 11:19am in 24-hour time.
11am is 11 hours after midnight.

Therefore, 11:19am = 11:19

c. Write 18:49 in 12-hour time.
18 hours after midnight is 6:00pm
Therefore, 18:49 = 6:49pm
