Inheritance V & E Lesson 15 Classification Worksheet

The document provides a classification of organisms, detailing their binomial names as Canis lupus, Escherichia coli, and Quercus robur. It emphasizes the importance of a universal naming system to avoid confusion caused by different names in various languages and to ensure accurate identification, especially for dangerous or medicinal organisms. Additionally, it discusses how advancements in biology, such as microscopy and DNA sequencing, have refined classification systems and led to the evolution of evolutionary trees based on genetic data.

Classification Answers
1. Use the information below to give the name of the organisms
Binomial name: Canis lupus, Escherichia coli, Quercus robur
2. Explain why it’s important to have a universal system for naming organisms.
The same organism may have lots of different names around the world and in different
languages. This makes it difficult for people to communicate with each other about organisms.
Sometimes the same names are used for different organisms. This can make it difficult to identify
the correct plant. This can cause problems for poisonous or dangerous organisms, or those which
need to be used for medicine. A universal system means that people are certain which organism
they are talking about.

3. Explain how developments in biology have affected classification systems.

Microscopes allowed scientists to look at cells in more detail. Biochemical data showed how some
cells were different from each other. DNA sequencing has given information about how similar
organisms are to each other. This has meant that scientists have added a higher level, called the
domain, to the Linnaean system. They have also split the prokaryote kingdom into two kingdoms
of eubacteria and archaebacteria.

4. Explain why evolutionary trees have changed over time

In the past, we relied on morphological information to work out how species were related to each
other. Now that we can use biological techniques to compare DNA and protein sequences, we can
work out the evolutionary relationships between organisms more reliably.
