False Diffusion

1. False or artificial diffusion refers to numerically introduced diffusion that arises when using discretization methods like upwind differencing schemes, especially for high Peclet number or convection dominant flows. 2. This artificial diffusion occurs due to the truncation error introduced by discretizing the governing equations and can be reduced by using higher-order schemes or refining the computational mesh. 3. Several higher-order schemes are discussed that can minimize false diffusion, including the QUICK scheme which is a third-order upwind scheme.

Summary of False Diffusion

1. The false or artificial diffusion term created purely by the discretization using UDS. 2. Artificial diffusion term decreases as mesh is refined 3. If you have sufficient physical diffusion, the false diffusion is less noticeable, but for high Pe, numerical diffusion can dominate

False Diffusion (1)

False diffusion is numerically introduced diffusion and arises in convection dominant flows, i.e., high Pe number flows Consider the problem below:

Diffusion set to zero k=0 Hot fluid T = 100C

If there is no false diffusion, the temperature along the diagonal will be 100C

False diffusion will occur due to the oblique flow direction and non-zero gradient of temperature in the direction normal to the flow Grid refinement coupled with a higher-order interpolation scheme will minimize the false diffusion
