IELTS Writing Task 2 - Introduction and Main Body Paragraph Notes

1. An introduction's primary function is to tell the reader what the essay will discuss. Keep it clear and

relevant.

2. Avoid using overly fancy vocabulary, memorized phrases, proverbs, or hooks. Focus on clarity, not

decoration.

3. For double questions, introduction must include: (1) paraphrased background statement, (2) brief answer

to Q1, (3) brief answer to Q2.

4. Effective paraphrasing combines synonyms and sentence structure variation. Avoid incorrect or loose

synonyms.

5. It's okay to repeat some words when needed; clarity and grammar matter more than forced variation.

6. Vocabulary choice must be accurate, context-appropriate, and grammatically correct when paraphrasing.

7. A strong introduction predicts a strong essay. It serves as a roadmap for the reader and writer.

8. Main body paragraphs must include: (1) Topic Sentence, (2) Explanation, (3) Example.

9. Topic sentence restates the main idea of the paragraph in new words and ensures coherence with the

introduction.

10. Explanations answer implicit questions: 'So what?', 'Why?', 'How?', etc. - to clarify the topic sentence.

11. Examples should be relevant, believable, and used to prove the main idea. They don't need to be true but

must make sense.

12. Repetition of ideas is essential for cohesion. Repetition of words should be minimized but not avoided at

the cost of meaning.

13. Planning your main ideas before writing saves time and improves coherence. Avoid writing a 'shopping

list' of ideas.

14. Use your introduction as a mini-plan to build logically consistent main body paragraphs.

15. Homework Task 1: Write an introduction to a double question essay using the 3-element structure.

16. Homework Task 2: Use your introduction to write Main Body Paragraph 1 with a topic sentence,

explanation, and example.
