(CV-362) Assignment No. 4 Fall - 2024

Elements of Structure Design (3+1)

Date: OBE Targets: Weightage:

21st April 2025 [CLO-2] - [PLO-2] – C-3 5 marks

Submission Deadline: 5th May 2025

Teacher Name: Engr. Sumaira Ismail

Question 1: Solve the following

You are tasked with designing a reinforced concrete frame for an industrial building.
A corner column of the frame is subjected to combined axial load, bending, and torsion due to the
following conditions:

 Axial Load Pu=1200 KN (ultimate load)

 Uniaxial Bending about the strong axis with Mu=80 kN
 Torsional Moment Tu=60 kN due to unsymmetrical loading from attached beams
 Clear height between floors = 5.5 meters
 Column cross-section initially assumed: 400 mm × 600 mm (width × depth), oriented so 600
mm is along bending
 Concrete grade: f'c = 40 MPa
 Reinforcing steel: fy = 500 MPa

Additional Information:

 The column is slender in the major axis (effective length factor k=1.0, and effective length
Le=5.5m.
 Moment magnification must be considered due to slenderness effects according to the ACI
Code (or similar).
 The column is assumed to be fixed at the base and pinned at the top

Tasks:

1. Check slenderness:
o Determine whether the column is slender by comparing Le/r to the limit (where r is
radius of gyration).
o If slender, apply moment magnification.

2. Calculate the design moment:

o Magnify the given moment Muaccording to the slenderness effect using the
appropriate formula.
3. Torsion Design:
o Check if torsional reinforcement is required according to the ACI/Eurocode threshold
(compare Tu against limit Tth).
o If required, determine the torsional reinforcement:
 Amount of closed stirrups (for shear flow)
 Longitudinal bars (for resisting combined torsion and bending).
4. Interaction Check:
o Perform a simplified check of the combined axial load, bending, and torsion using
an interaction diagram or appropriate code formulas.
5. Detail the reinforcement:
o Longitudinal and transverse reinforcement for the column considering all combined
actions.
o Provide a sketch showing reinforcement layout and torsional stirrups.
