(a) Two types of tensile reinforcement are available for a RC beam with the section shown in
Fig. 1: (1) three N32 bars with Ast = 2400 mm2 and (2) three N20 bars with Ast = 930 mm2.
Calculate the individual failure bending moment for such a beam with different tensile
reinforcement. Concrete strength f’c = 20 MPa, steel yielding strength fsy = 400 MPa and steel
Young’s modulus Es = 200,000 MPa.
(b) On the basis of the calculation in (a), which tensile reinforcement should be used for such
a section, according to the design criteria of RC beam for bending? You must provide reasons
to support your conclusion.
(c) If a design shear load V* of 350 kN is applied to this section, check whether the section is
adequate for shear and whether shear reinforcement can be applied to resist the shear load.
Take D=450 mm. You must provide calculation to support your conclusion, but you do not
need to calculate the spacing if shear reinforcement is deemed necessary.
