Dear Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, I am Tejesh Kanagaraju.

Today, a group of people

bullied me and ………..

I am honored to have the opportunity to address such a distinguished

chairperson, honourable judges, principals, teachers, and my fellow friends. A
very warm welcome and good morning to all.

Ladies and gentlemen, did you realise the issue I put forward earlier?
Well, Last December, our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared a letter
he received from a student with the public. She was merely a primary school
student who had the courage to address a national issue to her Prime minister.
Yes, you hear me clearly. The issue she mentioned in her letter is about a national
threat, which is ‘BULLYING’.

So, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the title of my speech today. I’m
going to talk about Bullying at School.

Members of the floor, I put forward some questions for you to ponder. Have you
ever bullied anyone? Or, have you been bullied by someone? How did you feel
when you bully or have been bullied by someone?

Probably, we all have had most likely bullied someone unintentionally. Stories
about bullying, terrible incidents, and victims of bullying are frequently reported
in the daily news. Bullying is no joke and yet it happens everywhere, and your
chances of experiencing it is high. It’s a widespread problem everywhere in the
globe, especially in schools.

Anybody intentionally trying to hurt your feelings, is actually bullying you. You might
not know it, but the person sitting next to you could be getting bullied. They might
look normal, but deep inside they could have been hurt. Bullying can be on the
internet, after school on your walk home, on the bus, maybe even in your own walls.
You might think that there are no bullies in your class, or even in the school, but
please believe that there is. There is at least someone among us waiting to.

Ladies and gentlemen,

school bullying can be defined as the situation in which one or more students
single out another student and intend to cause discomfort or harm the person. A
bully will repeatedly target the same victim several times. It’s usually, done
individually or in a group.

My fellow friends, can you name any forms of bullying? Well, there are various
types of bullying.
Firstly, physical bullying is the most common form of bullying, and the name itself
suggests what it means. It happens when a bully uses physical strength to threat
or dominate the victim. Second is verbal bullying. It can be defined as the usage
of slanderous language or statements causing emotional distress. Examples
include harassing, mocking, teasing, and threatening. Third, it’s the social or
Psychological bullying. This bullying takes place when a rumour or gossip goes on
around a student, where the victim being socially unacceptable. Next will be
emotional bullying. Psychological bullying and emotional bullying might go hand
in hand at times. Emotional bullying can be defined as hurting others emotionally
by negatively influencing their moods and psyche. For examples, belittling,
spreading false information, and defamation. Lastly, comes Cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying comes along with the internet and the social media platform
gaining popularity. Talking about cyberbullying might need a completely
different essay.

Well, I’m 100% sure that nobody would agree that bullying is beneficial. Ladies
and gentlemen, it only brings all the negative effects.

Very sad to say that the effect of bullying on a victim is traumatizing. It will cause
the student to have phobia towards school. Usually, the victims dare not to go to
school. School is a nightmare for them and this results negative impact on their
emotions. They, eventually will lost their interest in school activities and show poor
performances in studies and attendance.

On the other hand, some victims harbor intense anger and bitterness towards
bullies. If this anger is unable to resolve, the victims will end up bullying others to
revenge and express their anger. Some might express their anger through anti-
social behaviour such as vandalism and theft.

Furthermore, bullying can affect a child’s learning process. In order to have a

quality education, a child should have a safe and secured school environment.
While being under the threat of bullying, a child can never be able to fulfill their
academic potential. Apart from that, they might cultivate anti-social personality.
They will have mood swing such as depression, isolate themselves from others,
and have limited contact with peers.

Another thing that brings a serious threat is, bullying might lead to suicidal
attempt. A victim might choose the suicidal path to end the suffering. Above all,
the saddest truth is, this doesn’t affect only the victims but also their family. Feeling
powerless, parents and immediate family members might face depression and
emotional distress. Some parents would invest more time in protecting their
children, thus affecting them psychologically and economically.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Now, let’s not concern about the bully. Our main concern in this issue is how to
help the victims of bullying. Each one of us has a role to play if we intend to
overcome bullying.

Firstly, schools can help in the prevention of bullying by promoting a positive

school climate. Schools should raise the awareness among the students, teachers,
parents and the public as well. Consistent and immediate consequences for
bullying case must take place. Serious talk with parents of bullies and victims are
very important.

Parents, too, play a vital role in prevention of bullying. A loving and caring family
always can show support to the child and protect their child from danger. Parents
are encouraged to cooperate with the school to make sure their child is safe.

Finally, the role of media in this issue is by creating awareness among the public
through advertisements. After all, media is the best way to convey a message
and awareness towards the public.

When the behaviour of bullies is not corrected in school while they’re growing,
they will continue to do it and more victims will be affected.

So, ladies and gentlemen, the next time when you see a student bullying another
student, immediately report the issue and try to put a full stop to this misconduct.
Having said that prevention is better than cure, let’s put our heads together to
stop bullying at school and create a better world for the entire human race to live
in.
With that, I thank you.
