365 - Interconnecting Multiple LANs Using Routers in Cisco Packet Tracer

The document outlines an experiment conducted in a Computer Networking Lab at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, focusing on interconnecting multiple LANs using routers in Cisco Packet Tracer. The setup includes three LANs connected via routers, with a detailed working procedure for device placement, wiring, IP configuration, and routing. The experiment successfully demonstrated inter-LAN communication, though one connection failed, highlighting the importance of proper network configuration and testing.

Experiment Name:
Interconnecting Multiple LANs Using Routers in Cisco Packet Tracer.

Objective:
To simulate a multi-network environment using routers, switches, and PCs/Laptops in Cisco
Packet Tracer, enabling communication between different LANs.

Setup of Experiment:
The experiment consists of three different LANs, each connected to a dedicated router:

LAN 1 (Left Side)

Network Address: 192.168.10.2/24

Devices: 2 PCs connected to Switch0

Switch connected to Router0 via interface Fa0/0

Router0’s serial interface Se2/0 connects to Router1

LAN 2 (Middle)

Network Address: 200.200.200.2/24

Devices: 2 PCs connected to Switch1

Switch connected to Router1 via interface Fa0/0

Router1 has two serial interfaces: Se2/0 connects to Router0, Se3/0 connects to
Router2
LAN 3 (Right Side)

Network Address: 201.200.200.2/24

Devices: 2 Laptops connected to Switch2

Switch connected to Router2 via interface Fa0/0

Router2’s serial interface Se2/0 connects to Router1

Inter-router Links (Serial)

Router0 Se2/0 <--> Router1 Se2/0: Network 10.10.10.0/30

Router1 Se3/0 <--> Router2 Se2/0: Network 12.12.12.0/30

Working Procedure:
• Device Placement:

Place 3 routers, 3 switches, 4 PCs, and 2 laptops in the logical workspace.

• Wiring:

Use appropriate copper straight-through cables for connecting PCs/laptops to switches.

Use copper straight-through cables for switch-to-router connections.

• IP Configuration:

Assign IP addresses and subnet masks to all end devices and router interfaces based on
their respective network.

• Routing Configuration:

Configure static or dynamic routing (e.g., RIP, OSPF) on all routers to enable
communication between LANs and Ensure routing tables are updated and accurate.

• Testing:

Use the ping command from each PC/laptop to test connectivity across the network
Step by Step Working Procedure:
Ping : PC 0 to PC1
Result:
PC1 to PC2 (same LAN): Ping Successful

PC0 to Laptop0 (different LANs): Ping Successful

PC0 to Laptop1: Ping Failed (as per PDU list in screenshot)

Output/Topology:
Discussion:
The network setup demonstrates successful inter-LAN communication, confirming correct
routing and cabling. Most devices communicated as expected, except for PC0 to Laptop1. This
failure may be due to incorrect IP settings, a missing route, or a blocked ICMP request. It
highlights the importance of proper configuration and testing in network design.

Conclusion:
The experiment effectively simulates connecting multiple LANs using routers. While most
connections worked, one failed ping emphasizes the need for accurate setup and troubleshooting.
Overall, the lab reinforces key networking concepts and practical skills in configuring and
verifying network communication.
