assignments.

energy of 2.00m water. Calculate alternate depths and corresponding Froude numbers.
2. Supercritical flow occurs at Froude number (Fr=2) at a depth y=0.63m in a rectangular
channel. Find the discharge Intensity.
3. Calculate critical depth yc and corresponding specific energy Ec for the following
different shapes of channel when Q=8.5m3/sec having a rectangular triangular and
trapezoidal channel having width of 2.5m. Nb: m= 1.5 for triangular and terabizodal
channel
4. You are asked to design to design a trapezoidal channel which have a depth of 2.2m and
a velocity of 1.5m/s that have a bed width of 2m. Calculate the discharge, discharge
intensity and Froude number.

M=2 M=1.5

5. A clay tile V-shaped (n=0.0080) channel has an included angle of 70° and carries 8.5
m3/s. Compute.
a) The critical depth, and the critical velocity,
6. A rectangular channel has a width of 2.0 m and carries a discharge 5m3 /sec with a depth of 1.7m.
At a certain cross-section a small, smooth hump with a flat top and a height 0.15 m is proposed to
be built. Neglect the energy loss.
A). Calculate the likely change in the water surface.
B). in this example if the height of the hump is 0.50 m, estimate the water surface elevation on the
hump and at a section upstream of the hump.

7. Derive the equation showing critical depth for trapezoidal channel clearly.
8. Show that the critical depth yc is related to alternate depths y1 and y2 in rectangular channel

𝑦1 + 𝑦2
9. In a rectangular channel F1 and F2 are the Froude numbers corresponding to the alternate

depths of a certain discharge. Show that( ) =
𝐹𝑟1 2+𝐹𝑟12

10. Calculate the critical depth and the corresponding specific energy for a discharge 5 m 3/s
in the following channel.
a. Rectangular channel, B = 2.0 m
b. Triangular channel, m = 0.5
c. Trapezoidal channel, B = 2.0 m, m = 1.5
11. A trapezoidal channel have a bottom width twice depth of flow, side slope 1.5, a
longitudinal slope of 0.002 and estimated n of 0.015, find the normal depth of flow and
bottom width for a discharge of 10 m3 /sec.
12. The two alternative depths in a 4m wide rectangular channel are 3.86 and 2.5m
respectively. Calculate the discharge in the channel and Froude number.
13. Water flows at steady and uniform depth of 2 m in an open channel of rectangular cross-
section having base width equal to 5 m and laid at slope of 1 in 1000. It is desired to obtain
critical flow in the channel by providing a hump in the bed. Calculate the height of the
hump and sketch the flow profile. Consider the value of Manning’s rigidity co-efficient N
= 0.02 for channel surface.
14. Design a concrete lined channel to carry a discharge of 500 m3/s at slope of 1 in 4000.
The side slope of a channel may be taken to be 1:1 and the Mannings roughness co-
efficient for a linning is 0.014. Assume permissible velocity in the section is 2.5 m/s.
