INPhO Practice Questions

Set-1

These problems are selectively collected from various resources (Previous

different countries) and or framed to build strong mental temperament to attempt INPhO and IPhO exams.

Passage-1
Bicycle wheels have the same radius R , and the distance between the centers of the wheels l  3R.
Two small stones were stuck in the tread of the tires in front of him and the rear wheels. At the
initial moment, the stone on the rear wheel touches the ground, and the stone on the front wheel is
in the extreme position in front of it (Fig. 1). The bicycle travels in a straight line at a speed v , the
wheels do not slip on the road, the stones do not come off the tires.

Q1: (8 marks) Find the maximum Lmax and minimum Lmin of the distance between the stones during
the movement of the bicycle.
Q2: (4 marks) After what minimum time t after the start of movement, the distance between the stones
reaches its maximum value.
Passage-2
A thin rod with length L , mass m and uniform density lies on the y -axis with its midpoint at the
origin. A point object A with mass m travels with velocity u in the positive x direction hits the
rod with impact parameter h , where L / 2  h  L / 2 , as shown in Fig 1. The collision is perfectly
inelastic.

Q1: Find the total kinetic energy just after the collision between A and the rod.
Q2: Find the velocity v of point C at the top end of the rod as a function of h .

Q3: Find H such that v( H )  0 .

Q4: Suppose another point object B of mass m is located very close to point C , at the left hand side,
as shown in Fig 2. Further suppose the point object A hits the rod at the lower end. Find the velocity
of the point object B just after the rod collides elastically with it.
Passage-3
In the given figure a small ball of charge Q is fixed at the top of a sphere of radius R with a smooth
inner surface. The sphere itself is fixed as well (it does not move). Another small ball of charge q
and mass m is located at the bottom of the sphere. The system is in the gravitational field.

Q: Find the period of small oscillations of the small ball of charge q , assuming it was very slightly
displaced from its original position.

Passage-4

Consider two heavy cogwheels of masses M1 , M 2 and radii R1 , R2 connected with achain. Rods
with a wound rope are attached to each wheel in such way that the ropes hang asshown in the picture
below. The radii of the rods are 1 , 2 and masses 1 , 2 are attached to the ends of the ropes. At
the beginning, the system is kept at rest by holding the masses.

Q: What is the acceleration of mass 1 at the moment when the masses are released?

You may assume that the moment of inertia of the cogwheel is the same as the moment of inertia
of a disc of equal radius.

17. Atwood's Machine 3**
Find all tensions and the accelerations of the masses in the set-up below.

18. Atwood's Machine 4**

Determine the accelerations of the masses m and 2m. For the two pulleys on the next page, a
continuous string wraps once around the bottom pulley, once around the top pulley and one last
time around the bottom pulley before it is connected to the ceiling.

19. Atwood's Machine 5**

Determine the accelerations of all masses in the set-up below. Try to obtain the conservation of
string equation by visualizing the physical movement of strings.

21. Pulling a Mass**

A ball of mass m is attached to two strings - one is of length l1 and is attached to a fixed pivot A,
while the other is wrapped around a fixed pulley B and dragged along at a constant velocity v . The
instantaneous length of the segment between the mass and B is l2 . As a function of angles  and
 labelled in the diagram below, determine the tension on the ball due to the second string.

Que. A regular polygon with perimeter of 144 m and at least 3 sides has all the balls kept on all of it's
vertices. There is one ball of mass 4 kg and rest balls have mass 2 kg . The ball of mass 4 kg is
given a velocity ' v ' which strikes the neighboring 2 kg ball and after colliding elastically, the next
ball collides in the same manner. This process continues.. Question:-What is the maximum
circumradius of the polygon possible ?
