Rectangular and Polar Coordinates
This figure show how angles can be plotted using Rectangular and Polar Coordinates on
Rectangular and Polar Grids. The plot may be shown with a positive or negative angle and with a
positive or negative radius. The eleven features of this interactive figure are noted below.
1. Coordinates Click the box to select coordinates in either Rectangular or Polar form.
2. Values Check the box to show the coordinate values for the Red Point.
3. Degrees Check the box to show the Degrees in the Polar Values for the Red Point.
4. Negative Angle Check the box to show the negative angle associated with the point.
5. Negative Radius Check the box to show the point associated with the negative radius.
6. Grid Click the box to show the grid in either Rectangular or Polar form.
7. Formulas Check the box to show the formulas in the forms x = r cos(θ), y = r sin(θ),
r2 = x2 + y2, and .
8. Large Check the box to increase the screen graph to about 150% of original size.
9. Snap to Grid Check the box so that the Red Point will snap to the point on either the
Rectangular or Polar grid.
10. Click and drag Click the Red Point and drag it to the desired position on the grid.
11. Reset Click the button in the lower left corner to return figure to default settings.
Exploratory Exercise: Click the Reset button in the lower left corner. Observe the
graph as you check the Values box, the Negative Angle box, the Negative Radius box,
and the Formulas box. Click and drag the red dot while observing the graph and values.
Click the Reset button in the lower left corner. Uncheck the Degrees box. Click the
Coordinates Polar button. Observe the graph as you check the Values box, the Degrees
box, the Negative Angle box, the Negative Radius box, the Grid Polar button, and the
Formulas box. Click and drag the red dot while observing the graph and formulas.
a) Click the Reset button in the lower left corner. Uncheck the Degrees box. Check
the Values box. Click and drag the red dot to the point (-6, 8). Determine the r-value,
θ, the negative angle, and θ for the negative radius. Round off non-integral values to
two-decimal places.
b) Click the Coordinates Polar button. Compare your answers in Part (a) to those given
on the graph as you check one or more of the following boxes as needed: Formulas,
Negative Angle, and Negative Radius.
c) Click the Reset button in the lower left corner. Click the Coordinates Polar
button. Uncheck the Degrees box. Check the Values box. Click and drag the red dot
to (10, 5.36). Determine the x-value, the y-value, θ, the negative angle, and θ for the
negative radius. Round off non-integral values to two-decimal places.
d) Compare your answers in Part (c) to those given on the graph as you check one or
more of the following boxes as needed: Formulas, Negative Angle, and Negative
Radius.
