Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)

• The PCI bus is a path

used to deliver
information from PCBs
to the CPU

• PCBs include audio,

video, network, and so
on…
– This makes it a very
busy bus
– 32 or 64 bits wide

receive
• Packets of data move across the lane at a rate of one bit per cycle.
• A x1 connection, has one lane made-up of four wires
• A x2 link contains eight wires and transmits two bits at once
• A x4 link transmits four bits

USB
USB 1.0
 USB 1.0: Released in January 1996.
 Specified data rates of 1.5 Mbit/s (Low-Speed) and 12 Mbit/s (Full-Speed). Does not allow for extension cables or pass-
through monitors (due to timing and power limitations). Few such devices actually made it to market.
 USB 1.1: Released in September 1998.
 Fixed problems identified in 1.0, mostly relating to hubs. Earliest revision to be widely adopted.

USB 2.0
 Released in April 2000.
 Added higher maximum speed of 480 Mbit/s
(now called Hi-Speed).
 Mini-B Connector ECN: Released in October 2000.

• Developed for Audio / Video to computer connections
• Does not require the computer to be rebooted in order to recognize
newly connected devices
• Firewire devices are addressed dynamically and instantly when
connected or disconnected
• Can be used as a networking device

application
• DLLs provide one or more particular functions
• Programs can access the functions by creating either a static or
dynamic link
• Static links remain constant (open) during program execution
• Dynamic links are opened and closed by the program as needed

years
• CD is considered to be a more reliable storage media
• The time that data in “guaranteed” to be stored
– CD 15 years
– DVD 10 years
