Servo

A servomechanism is a device that uses input control signals to drive an output actuator for specific functions, classified into open loop and closed loop systems. Closed loop mechanisms allow for continuous sampling and comparison of output results with input instructions, enabling precise control over position, speed, and torque. Key concepts include command pulses for movement, position precision determination, and the importance of managing torque to maintain consistent performance.

Servo

Servomechanisms
• A servomechanism is a physical device that
responds to an input control-signal by forcing
an output actuator to perform a desired
function
• “serving machine.”
Classification
• Open loop servo mechanism
– Washing Machine
• Running based on timer - Regardless of the cleanliness
or dirtiness of the clothes, the machine will complete
the cycle as it was asked to
• Closed loop servo mechanism
– The output results are sampled continuously and
the information is continuously compared with
the input instructions.
Closed loop Servo Mechanism
• Servo mechanisms enables position control,
speed control and torque control
Closed loop servo mechanism
Closed loop servo mechanism
• Position control loop mode – position control,
speed control and current control (Eg. Plotter)
• Speed control mode – speed control and
current control
• Torque control mode – current control (Speed
control needed only during no load condition)

Load
Positioning the object
Command Pulse
• The machine travel amount is proportional to
the total command pulse number
• The machine speed proportional to the pulse
frequency
• The position is maintained as long as no
pulses are updated
Determination of Position precision
• Travel amount of a mechanical system per
servo motor rotation
• Number of output pulses of the encoder per
servo motor rotation
• Errors such as backlash(angle that the output
shaft of a gearhead can rotate without the
input shaft moving) of a mechanical system
Speed control mode
• Soft Start/stop functions

• Wide range of speed

– The rated torque characteristics is within the speed
range
• Low rate of change in speed – during change in
load, less change in speed
Torque control

• Load torque increases as winding roll radius increases

• Torque should be controlled to maintain tension
constant
