Good job! Now study and learn the problems and solutions below.
Activity 1 – Read and study
Jenny was helping her mother in their sari- sari store when a
delivery man delivered 20 dozens of eggs at P42 a dozen. If the
delivery man gave him a change of P160 how much did Jenny give
to the delivery man?
1) Answer the following.
a) Who helped mother in the store? Jenny
b) Who delivered dozens of eggs? delivery man
c) How many dozens of eggs were delivered to them?20 dozens
d) If you were Jenny:
3
• Will you help your family earn a living? Yes, to help
my parent in earning a living.
• Will you keep the change given by the delivery man? Yes
• Why? To give it to my mother.
2) Give the following.
a) What are the given data? 20 dozens, P42 a dozen and P160.
b) What are the operations to be used? Addition and
Multiplication
3) Formulate an expression related to the problem.( number
sentence) Jenny’s money= 20×42+160
4) Evaluate the expression you had formulated
Jenny’s money= 20×42+160
= 840+160
= 1000
5) Analyze the operation you used in getting the exact answer.
What strategy used to solve the problem?
Working backward
What number sentence was formed?

Rule 3: Multiply and divide in the order as they appear from left
to right.
Rule 4: Add and subtract in the order as they appear from left to
right.
This is what we call now the GEMDAS rule (Grouping symbols,
Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and
Subtraction).
Let us apply the GEMDAS rule: Study the examples below.
5
= 7+46–6 → Then, add 7 and 46
= 53 – 6 → subtract 53 and 6
= 47
Answer: 47
Example 4 Simplify: 4+[2(6–3)]
= 4+[2(6-3)] → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis, subtract 6 and 3
= 4+[2(3)] → Next simplify the expression inside the
square bracket. Multiply 2 by 3.
= 4+6 → add 4 and 6
= 10
Answer: 10
Example 5 Simplify: 5–[(4+2×23)÷10]
= 5–[(4+2×23)÷10] → Simplify first the expression with exponent,
2³.
= 5–[(4+2×8)÷10] → Simplify the expression inside the bracket.
Multiply 2 by 8.
= 5–[(4+16)÷10] → Simplify the expression inside the bracket.
Add 4 and 16
= 5–(20÷10) → Divide 20 by 10.
=5–2 → Subtract 5and 2
=3
Answer: 3
Example 6 Simplify: 42–4×32+2(5–2)3
= 42–4×32+2(5–2)³ → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis. Subtract 5 and 2.
= 42–4×3²+2(3)³ → Simplify expressions with exponent. 3²
and (3)³
6
= 42–4×9+2(27) → Perform multiplication. Multiply 4 by 9
= 42–36+54 → subtract 42 and 36
= 6 + 54 → add 6 and 54
= 60
Answer: 60

1. Simplify he operation in grouping symbols. Start from the
innermost grouping symbol.
2. Evaluate exponential expression.
3. Multiply and divide in the order as they appear from left to
right.
4. Add and subtract in the order as they appear from left to right.
And remember also that helping our parent in earning a
living brings joy to your parents. So help them always.

Let Us Study
In your previous lesson, you have learned about what is the base
and exponent. For example: 25= 2 is the base,5 is the exponent.
Today, you will learn how to solve the value of numbers
expressed in exponential notation. For instance, 23= 2 x 2 x 2= 8
Example 1
Any non-zero
1. 1ᴼ = 1 number with zero
2. 5ᴼ = 1 exponent is equal
3. 10ᴼ = 1 to 1.
4. 100 ᴼ = 1
to square a base
Example 3 number, the
number is
1. 𝟏𝟐 =1
multiply by
2. 𝟓𝟐 =25
itself.
3. 𝟏𝟎𝟐 =100
4. 𝟏𝟎𝟎2= 10000
11
Example 4
Cube of a number is 1. 𝟏𝟑 =1
just multiplying the 2. 𝟓𝟑 =75
number itself thrice. 3. 𝟏𝟎𝟑 =100
4. 𝟏𝟎𝟎3= 1 000 000
Let Us Practice

Let Us Practice More
Let Us Remember
Remember:
• A number in exponential notation has a base and
exponent. The base is the repeated factor. The
exponent tells how many times the base is used as a
factor.
• Any zero number with a zero exponent is equal to 1.
• Any number raised to the exponent is equal to the
number itself.
• To square a base number, the number is multiplied by
itself.
• When multiplying a negative, it just multiplying a
number by itself, and we all know that a negative
number multiplied by a negative number will gives us
positive.
• The number of zeros found after the digit in a power of
10 corresponds to the exponent of 10.
