Let Us Study

Good job! Now study and learn the problems and solutions below.
Activity 1 – Read and study
Jenny was helping her mother in their sari- sari store when a
delivery man delivered 20 dozens of eggs at P42 a dozen. If the
delivery man gave him a change of P160 how much did Jenny give
to the delivery man?
1) Answer the following.
a) Who helped mother in the store? Jenny
b) Who delivered dozens of eggs? delivery man
c) How many dozens of eggs were delivered to them?20 dozens
d) If you were Jenny:

3
• Will you help your family earn a living? Yes, to help
my parent in earning a living.
• Will you keep the change given by the delivery man? Yes
• Why? To give it to my mother.
2) Give the following.
a) What are the given data? 20 dozens, P42 a dozen and P160.
b) What are the operations to be used? Addition and
Multiplication
3) Formulate an expression related to the problem.( number
sentence) Jenny’s money= 20×42+160
4) Evaluate the expression you had formulated
Jenny’s money= 20×42+160
= 840+160
= 1000
5) Analyze the operation you used in getting the exact answer.
What strategy used to solve the problem?
Working backward
What number sentence was formed?

Jenny’s money= 20×42+160

Does the MDAS rules applied in solving? Yes

What are the steps followed in solving?
160+20×42
Step 1 = 160+ 840 → multiply 20 by 42
Step 2 = 1000 → add 160 and 840
Final answer: Jenny’s money is P1,000.

A series of operations may also involve grouping symbols

and exponents. In solving series of operations the following
rules can be used:
Rule 1: Simplify the operations inside the grouping symbols
first. Grouping symbols are always done from the
innermost set outward
Rule 2: Evaluate exponential expressions.

4
Rule 3: Multiply and divide in the order as they appear from left
to right.
Rule 4: Add and subtract in the order as they appear from left to
right.
This is what we call now the GEMDAS rule (Grouping symbols,
Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and
Subtraction).
Let us apply the GEMDAS rule: Study the examples below.

Example 1 Simplify: 2 + 7×3 – 5

= 2 + 7 × 3 – 5 → Multiply 7 and 3
= 2 + 21 – 5 →add 2 and 21
= 23 – 5 →subtract 23 and 5
= 18
Answer: 18
Example 2 Simplify: 3×4÷(7-5)–12÷4
= 3×4÷(7–5)–12÷4 → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis.
= 3×4÷2-12÷4 → multiply 3 by 4
= 12 ÷ 2 – 12 ÷ 4 → Divide 12 by 2 and 12 by 4
=6–3 → Subtract 6 and 3
=3
Answer: 3
Example 3 Simplify: 7+[2(12–5)+ 32]–18÷3
= 7+[2(12–5)+32]–18÷3 → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis, subtract 12 and 5
= 7+[2(7)+32]–18÷3 → Next, multiply 2 and 7 inside the bracket.
= 7+[14+32]–18÷3 → Add 14 1nd 42 inside the bracket.
= 7+46–18÷3 → Perform the division. Divide 18 by 3.

5
= 7+46–6 → Then, add 7 and 46
= 53 – 6 → subtract 53 and 6
= 47
Answer: 47
Example 4 Simplify: 4+[2(6–3)]
= 4+[2(6-3)] → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis, subtract 6 and 3
= 4+[2(3)] → Next simplify the expression inside the
square bracket. Multiply 2 by 3.
= 4+6 → add 4 and 6
= 10
Answer: 10
Example 5 Simplify: 5–[(4+2×23)÷10]
= 5–[(4+2×23)÷10] → Simplify first the expression with exponent,
2³.
= 5–[(4+2×8)÷10] → Simplify the expression inside the bracket.
Multiply 2 by 8.
= 5–[(4+16)÷10] → Simplify the expression inside the bracket.
Add 4 and 16
= 5–(20÷10) → Divide 20 by 10.
=5–2 → Subtract 5and 2
=3
Answer: 3
Example 6 Simplify: 42–4×32+2(5–2)3
= 42–4×32+2(5–2)³ → Simplify first the expression inside the
parenthesis. Subtract 5 and 2.
= 42–4×3²+2(3)³ → Simplify expressions with exponent. 3²
and (3)³

6
= 42–4×9+2(27) → Perform multiplication. Multiply 4 by 9
= 42–36+54 → subtract 42 and 36
= 6 + 54 → add 6 and 54
= 60
Answer: 60
