Solving Matrixes

Matrices
Dimensions are number of rows by number of columns.

Entering data for Matrices

 To enter a matrix

o Press 2 nd , ¿ to enter the matrix program.

o Press the right arrow and go to EDIT.

o Select which slot you want to enter your matrix. Hit ENTER .
o Type in the dimensions (ie. row x column, 2 x 3, 4 x 7). Hit ENTER .
o Type in each element or number.
o Press 2 nd , ENTER .

Matrix Once each matrix is inputted, you can start performing operations
Matrix Addition and Subtraction
In order to add or subtract matrices, the matrices have to have the same dimensions. So the
same number of rows and columns.
Once both matrices are inputted, simply go to the main screen (Press 2 nd , MODE )

 To add or subtract matrices

o Press 2 nd , ¿.
o Select a matrix.
o Select addition or subtraction.
o Press 2 nd , ¿ and select your next matrix.
o Press ENTER

Matrix Multiplication
In order to multiply matrices, the first matrix has to have the same row number as the number
of columns of the second matrix. The resulting matrix will take the row number of the first
matrix and the column number of the second matrix.

 To multiply matrices
o Press 2 nd , ¿.
o Select a matrix.
o Select multiplication.
o Press 2 nd , ¿ and select your next matrix.
o Press ENTER
Finding the determinant
The determinant is a number that allows us to find the inverse. On the SAT II Math exam, they
simply may just ask you to find the determinant.

 To find the determinant

o Press 2 nd , ¿.
o Select MATH.
o Select [ 1:det( ]
o Press 2 nd , ¿ and select the matrix you want to find the determinant of.
o Press ENTER

Find the inverse of a matrix

The inverse of a matrix can only be found by square matrices which are matrices with an equal
number of rows and columns.
 To find the inverse of a matrix
o Press 2 nd , ¿.
o Select a matrix and Press ENTER
o Press x−1 and Press ENTER
