Parent Functions

The document discusses expressing various functions in terms of their parent functions, including quadratic, cubic, and absolute value functions. It provides specific examples of how to write functions g(x) in relation to their respective parent functions, such as g(x) = x^2 + 6 and g(x) = |x - 1| + 5. The document highlights the relationships between these functions and their transformations.

To express the function g( x) in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^2, you can write

g( x) = f( x) +6

So, g( x) = x^2+6 is in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^2.

To express the function g( x) in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^2, you can write

g( x) = f( x)- 3

So, g( x) = x^2- 3 is in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^2.

a. The parent function f( x) would be a boxy function, which is generally represented as

f( x) = x^3. thus, the parent function f( x) in this case would be: f( x) = x^3
b. To express the function g( x) in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^3, you can write
g( x) = - f( x- 2). So, g( x) = -( x- 2)^3 is in terms of the parent function f( x) = x^3.

a. The absolute value function, f(x) = |x|, is the parent function 'f' related to the
function g(x) = |x - 1| + 5.
b.
The function g(x)= |x1|+5 is expressed in terms of the parent function f(x) = |x| as; g(x) = f(x

a. The parent function is f(x) = x

b.
