AGR 703 & AGR 803:
Computer Application in
Agriculture

Learning Objectives
• To provide students with a background information on
computer application in Agriculture.

• To broaden the students critical thinking skill on the

types of computing technology available in agriculture.

• Using two case study to thoroughly explore how digital

technologies in agriculture can be used to advance
research in Agriculture.
Introduction: Food for thought
• There are many challenges facing the agricultural sector and
innovations using modern computer technologies are required.
• Ecological challenges – farmers need to pre-empt environmental
impact due to climate change
• According to UN data, by 2050 the worlds population will grow by 2
billion people
• The world will require a 60% increase in food production to feed the
global population
• Computer application in agriculture are needed to revolutionized
farming practice and improve food production supply chain
Digital agriculture is the use of computer technology to integrate agricultural
production from the paddock to the consumer. These technologies can

Computing Technologies in Agriculture
1. Geographic Information System (GIS)
• Farmers were often in the dark about soil output and unpredictable weather
conditions affecting crop quality and profitability
• GIS evaluate land and provide site assessment
• GIS provide farmers with control by predicting important information like
fertilizer application, problem with drainage, insects and weeds
• GIS technology help monitor irrigation, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor
guidance and crop scouting
• This technology equips farmer with information to increase crop yield
2. Guidance Technology (Autonomous Technology):
• This is widely used in self-propelled equipment to aid crop seeding and
fertilizer application
• Automated feeding systems, computerised milk collection and milking
machines
• This result to better economic yield for the dairy industry as well as live stock
production.
3. Farm Software:
• There are different software customize for farming purpose.
• For e.g., In livestock farming, ready-made computer applications are
available to track animals, storing and evaluating information such as
age, health records, milk production, offspring productivity and
reproductive cycle status.
• Other software for accounting and record keeping .
4. E – agriculture
• An emerging field in agriculture
• The main focus is on innovative ways and best practices to use the
existing ICT for sustainable agricultural development technological
fields.
• Other technological field are agricultural informatics, agricultural
development and business.
• It employ all available technology (computer, mobile computing,
satellite systems, smart cards) for the empowerment of farmers and
strengthening of partnership across the food chain
Successful Artificial Intelligent (AI) Application
in Agriculture
• Drone data is helping producers optimize the use of pesticide
• Linear AI programming is enabling farmers to conserve more water
• IoT sensors are providing real-time insight into previously untraceable
data sets
• AI-powered yield mapping is improving crop-planning accuracy
• AI-enhanced livestock monitoring is improving animal health and
increasing profits
Application of Computer
in Agriculture: Case
Study

their face using AI

reverse years of poverty reduction in Togo
• More people were force into poverty.
• World Bank estimated that between 119 and 124 million people in LMIC
will be pushed into extreme poverty in 2020.
• Government of Togo lunched “Novissi” – a social assistance program
designed to provide emergency cash assistance to Togo’s poorest families.
• Using satellite and mobile phone data in AI and machine learning
algorithm, “Novissi” provided over half a million individual with cash.
• Beneficiaries registered with their mobile phones and they were
