3. A 3 phase,8 pole, 50 Hz, 4160 V, 1000 kW, Squirrel cage Induction motor has the following equivalent
circuit parameters in Ω per phase with reference to stator. R1 = 0.220 ; R2 = 0.207 ; X1 = 1.95 ; X2
= 2.42 ; Xm = 45.7. Determine the changes in these values which will result from the following
proposed design modifications. Consider each modification separately. [6]
a. Replace the stator winding with an otherwise identical winding with a wire size whose cross
sectional area is increased by 4 percent.
b. Decrease the inner diameter of the stator lamination such that air gap is decreased by 15 percent.
c. Replace the aluminium rotor bars(conductivity 3.5 x 107 mhos/m) with copper bars (conductiv-
ity 5.8 x 107 mhos/m)
d. Reconnect the stator winding, originally which was connected in star for 4160 V operation, in
delta for 2.4 kV operation.
5. A 3 phase Squirrel cage Induction motor has a rotor resistance of 0.3Ω per phase and rotor reactance
of 2.5Ω per phase at standstill. The ratio of maximum torque to full load torque is 3. Find the ratio of
actual starting torque to full load torque for star-delta starting. Assume data if necessary . [5]
6. A 4 pole, 50Hz , 3 phase Induction motor has rotor resistance 0.03Ω per phase and reactance 0.2Ω
per phase. Find the speed at which the maximum torque will occur and find the external resistance to
be added in the rotor circuit per phase to attain 75% of maximum torque at starting . [5]
7. A 400V, 3 phase, 4 pole, 50 Hz Induction motor has a star connected stator and rotor. The standstill
rotor reactance is 1.2Ω per phase and resistance is 0.25Ω per phase.The ratio of stator to rotor turns
