Case Study For VLAN

The case study outlines a small company's need to implement VLANs to enhance network security and efficiency by segmenting their network into three departments: Sales, IT, and HR. Each department is assigned a specific VLAN ID and IP range, and inter-VLAN communication is facilitated through a router. The document also highlights the benefits of VLANs, including reduced congestion, improved security, and better network management.

VLAN Implementation for a Small Office Network

Problem:

A small company with three departments—Sales, IT, and HR—wants to improve network security and efficiency by
segmenting their network using VLANs. Currently, all departments share a single broadcast domain, causing
congestion and potential security risks.

The company has:

• One switch (Layer 2)

• Three departments with the following devices:
o Sales: 4 PCs
o IT: 3 PCs
o HR: 3 PCs
• A router for inter-VLAN communication
• Each department must be in its own VLAN.

The network administrator's task is to configure VLANs for the departments and ensure that inter-VLAN
communication is possible using a router.

Case Questions:

1. What are the benefits of using VLANs in this scenario? 5pts

2. Which VLAN IDs should be assigned to each department? 5pts
3. How would the switch be configured to ensure VLAN separation? 5pts
4. How will inter-VLAN communication be achieved? 5pts
5. Provide a basic configuration diagram for VLAN. 5pts
Answer KEY

Solution:

1. Benefits of Using VLANs

• Reduces network congestion by limiting broadcast domains.

• Improves security by isolating departments.
• Enhances network management and scalability.

2. VLAN Assignments

Connected to three VLANs:

• VLAN 10 (Sales) → 4 PCs (192.168.10.0/24)

• VLAN 20 (IT) → 3 PCs (192.168.20.0/24)
• VLAN 30 (HR) → 3 PCs (192.168.30.0/24)

3. VLAN Configuration on Switch

Each department is assigned a VLAN, and ports are grouped accordingly.

4. Enabling Inter-VLAN Communication

Since VLANs on a Layer 2 switch cannot communicate directly, a router (Router-on-a-

stick or Trunk Port connection method) is used for inter-VLAN routing.

5. Representation of Network Layout
