The actual enumeration of population of the 1981 Census operations was carried out during
the period from February 9 to February 28, 1981. This was followed by a revisional round
of five days from March 1 to March 5, 1981. The enumeration agency counted the houseless
population on the night of February 28, 1981. The reference date for the 1981 Census was
the sunrise of March 1, 1981.
Soon after the field operations were over, this Directorate published Provisional Paper-!
of 1981 Census of Manipur in April, 1981, by compiling some basic data from the abstracts
submitted by the District Census Officers, Charge Officers, Supervisors and Enumerators. This
Paper furnished some basic provisional data on distribution of population with sex break-up
upto the district level. Thereafter a Supplement to Paper-J of 1981 was published in September,
1981. The Supplement presented more detailed data, though still provisional, on the population
of Manipur. It furnished population of the State with sex break-up upto the level of the sub-
divisions and of the towns. Some analytical notes on rural urban composition of population-
workers and non-workers, sex-ratio, literacy and disabled population were also appended to
the Supplement.
The massive Census records collected from the field agency have been subjected to close
scrutiny in the Regional Tabulation Office set up at Keisamthong, Imphal where various data
were processed after matching and editing. Work of this magnitude is naturally time-consuming
and, it has taken us quite some time after the actual enumeration of population, to arrive at
the final fi'gures of the Census.
This Directorate will be bringing out some useful publications like Part II·A·General
Population Tables, Part H-B-Primary Census Abstract, and Part XIII-District Census Handbook,
on the basis of the figures collected during the €ensus of 1981. Compilation and publication
of these detailed and bulky volumes wilJ, however, take a long time. In the meantime we are
anxious that the final population figures, though in limited detail, should be made available
to the data users and the pUblic. It is hoped that this small Paper will be of some use to those
who "re lookinS for the final fisures of the 1981 Ceusus,
