LABORATORY 1
(CLO1:PLO5)
OBJECTIVES
1. To construct and simulate a series RLC circuit using MATLAB.
2. To measure voltage and current using a simulation of an RLC circuit in MATLAB.
LIST OF REQUIREMENTS
Personal computer/laptop/notebook installed with MATLAB 2017 Software.
INTRODUCTION
MATLAB is a programming platform designed specifically for engineers and scientists to
analyze and design systems and products. It includes built-in mathematical functions
fundamental to solving engineering and scientific problems, and an interactive environment
ideal for iterative exploration, design, and problem solving.
Furthermore, MATLAB provides a vast library of toolboxes for signal processing, symbolic
computation, control system, simulation, optimization, and several other fields of applied
science and engineering.
PROCEDURE
PART A: CREATE NEW PROJECT
1. Click on the MATLAB icon as shown in Figure 1.1 on the computer desktop.
Figure 1.2
3. Simulink Start Page will appear and click on the “Blank Model” to create a model.
Figure 1.3
4. After that, click ‘Save’ to save the template with the name of EXP 1_<NAME>_EPO246

2. First, click on ‘Library Browser’ to find components. The component categories are
shown along with a search option. Then, write the component name into the search box.
Next, right click on the component and select ‘ Add block to model ’ as shown in Figure
1.6.
Figure 1.6
3. Double click on the component to enter its value. Refer Table 1.1 for details.
Figure 1.7
4. To insert components for resistor, capacitor and inductor, choose ‘Series RLC Branch’.
Then, double click on the component and select R for resistor at ‘Branch type’ as shown
in Figure 1.8.
Figure 1.8
5. Next, insert the value of the resistor at ‘Resistance (Ohm)’ and click ‘Measurements’.
Choose Branch voltage and current. Refer Figure 1.9. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for capacitor
and inductor.
Figure 1.9
Figure 1.10
3. Next, click on ‘Library Browser’ and select Scope, RMS Measurement, and Display for
each component to view the result. See Figure 1.11.
Figure 1.11
2. Run the simulation by clicking on the ‘Run’ button. Double click the Scope to see the
waveform.
3. Record all the readings in Table 1.2. Lastly, screenshot the waveform and the schematic
diagram of the RLC circuit. Record it in Table 1.3 and Table 1.4 respectively.
DISCUSSION
1. Briefly explain the purpose of powergui in MATLAB Simulink?
2. Based on the results obtained, discuss the difference between RMS value and peak
value for alternating current (AC).
INSTRUCTION TO STUDENT
Write a short report which includes results, discussion, conclusion and references.
