Assignment - 2

1.) A rectangular steel bar having a cross-section 2 cm × 3 cm is subjected to a tensile force

of 6000 N. If the axes are chosen as shown in Fig. 1, determine the normal and shear stresses
on a plane whose normal has the following direction cosines:

(i) nx = ny = 1/ 2, nz = 0

(ii) nx = 0, ny = nx = 1/ 2

(iii) nx = ny = nz = 1/ 3

2.) At a point P in a body, σxx = 10,000 N/cm2 , σyy = -5,000 N/cm2 , σzz = -5,000 N/cm2 ,
τxy = τyz = τzx = 10, 000N/cm2 . Determine the normal and shearing stresses on a plane that
is equally inclined to all the three axes.
3.) At a point P, the rectangular stress components are σxx = 1, σyy = -2, σzz = 4, τxy = 2,

5.) Obtain the equilibrium equation in terms of component form in both cylindrical (êr , êθ , êz )
and spherical coordinate systems (êr , êθ , êϕ ).

6.) Verify −3J2 = √12 [(σ1 − σ2 )2 + (σ2 − σ3 )2 + (σ3 − σ1 )2 ] 2 where J2 represents the second
invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor and σ1 , σ2 , and σ3 represent principal stresses.

energy Ud for an elastic solid body.
13.) Compute/Obtain the expressions for the engineering constants Young’s modulus E and
Poisson’s ratio ν for an isotropic material in terms of shear modulus µ and Lame’s constant λ.
Also obtain the relation for µ and λ in terms of E and ν.
14.) Show that Hooke’s law for an isotropic material may be expressed in terms of spherical and
deviatoric tensors by the two relations σ̃ij = 3kϵ̃ij , and σ̂ij = 2µϵ̂ij , where k is bulk modulus.

fields and show that this problem represents the pure bending of a rectangular beam in the x-y
plane.
16.) Determine the strain and rotation tensors ϵij and ωij for the displacement field u = Axy,
v = Byz 2 , w = C(x2 + z 2 ), where A, B, and C are arbitrary constants.
17.) Assume that we are dealing with a two-dimensional deformation problem in the x-y plane
