11.1 Functions

Linear Relationships

A relationship between two quantities is called a linear

relationship if it produces data points thats all lie on a
straight line when graphed.

For this graph of a linear relationship, can you predict where

to place the 4th4th data point in the graph?

A radio station has 3636 concert tickets to give away as

prizes. They decide to give away 44 tickets every day
until they run out of tickets. Is the relationship between
the number of tickets left and how many days have
passed a linear relationship?
WORKED EXAMPLE

The cost of hiring a digger is a fixed charge of $35 plus $10 per day.

Fill the table below to show how the price is changing day by day.3

(The functions shows how to work out the cost for any number of days)

Number of Daily Cost in

Days Hired (n) dolars (y)

1 35 + 10

2 35 + 𝟐 × 10

3 35 + 𝟑 × 10

4 35 + 𝟒 × 10

5 35 + 𝟓 × 10

n 35 + 10𝒏

The function to find the cost of any day is 𝒚 = 𝟑𝟓 + 𝟏𝟎𝒏

1. Emma orders some notebooks online. Each notebook costs $5, and there is a fixed
postage fee of $3. Write a function to show the cost in dollars (c) of b books.

2. A plumber comes to a house to do a repair. He charges a fixed fee of $45 plus $30 per hour.

Write the function to show the cost in dolars (c) of a job that takes h hours.

Number of Hours (h) The cost in dollars (c)

1 45 + 30

1.5 45 + 30 × 1.5

2 45 + 30 × 2

4. The cost of scaffolding is $80 delivery plus $50 per week.

The cost is $y for w weeks. Find the expression for y.

Number of weeks (w) The cost in dollars (y)

5. The cost of printing photos is $2 per photo plus a fixed charge of $3.

a. Work out the cost of printing 40 photos.

b. The cost of n photos is $c. Write a function for c.

c. Marcus pays $49. How many photos were printed for Marcus.

6. The cost of hiring a car is a fixed fee of $25 plus $45 per day.

Show that the cost of hiring a car for 7 days is $340.

Read what Sofia says:

Explain why is not correct.

Write a function to show the cost in dollars (a) of hiring a car for n day.

7. A bamboo plant is 1.5 m tall. It grows 0.2 m every week.

a. Work out the height after 2 weeks , 4 weeks

b. How long will it take until the bamboo is 3.5 m tall? Justify your answer.

c. Write a function to show the height in metres (h) after t weeks.

Number of weeks (t) The cost in dollars (h)

8. Read what Zara if her father is “I am 2 years less than half my father’s age.”

a. Zara is z years old and her father is f years old. Write a function for z in terms of f.

b. How old is Zara’s father if Zara is 30 years old?

9. Here is a function r = 18−3𝑡. A car is on a journey. The amount of fuel in the tank of the car
after t hour is r litres.

Number of hours (t) r = 18−𝟑𝒕

10.
A.

There are 2p + 5 counters in the picture.

If p = 17, how many counters are there altogether?

B.

a. There are w pens in each box.

Total number of pens =

b. There are w pens in each box. There are 1200 pens altogether. How many pens are
there in each box? (Find the value of w.)

C. Electricity costs $20 a month plus $0.18 per unit of electricity used. One month, Rishi
uses 50 units of electricity. How much does this cost?

D. To find the perimeter of a rectangle you add together double the length and double
the width. The length of the rectangle is l and the width is w. Select the correct
formula for the perimeter, P, of the rectangle.
11.2 Plotting Graphs

Cartesian Coordinate Plane

We represent functions graphically by plotting

points on a coordinate plane (also sometimes
called the Cartesian plane). The coordinate
plane is a grid formed by a horizontal number
line and a vertical number line that cross at a
point called the origin.
A straight line graph is a visual representation of a linear function. It has a general
equation of: 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒄

𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1

𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3

Plot the points on graphs Join the point

𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 4

Plot the points on graphs Join the points

Do it yourself!

𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 5
Complete the table of values for 𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 4

𝑦 = 4 − 2𝑥
𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 5

The grid blow shows the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3

Draw the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥. Compare the two function to see what changed. Explain it.
11.3 Gradient and Intercept

y=mx+c

The intercepts of a graph is where it crosses the

coordinate axes.

c is the y-intercept (the point in which the line crosses the y-axis). (x=0)

x-intercept (the point in which the line crosses the x-axis). (y=0)

The gradient ‘m’

The gradient of the line tells us how steep the line is.
We use the letter m to denote the gradient.

𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒄 Gradient “m” y−intercept “c” x−intercept

(x=0) (y=0)

𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 4 2 4 −2

𝑦 = 6𝑥 − 3 6 −3 0.5

𝑦 = −4𝑥 −4 0 0
𝑦 =6−𝑥 −1 6 6

NOTE: If the graph aligned left m is negative. If it is aligned right m is positive.
