Course Objective: The aim of this course is to build the foundation for communication
system design focusing on the challenges of digital communication. The intended objective
is to impart knowledge to the engineering students about the transmission/reception of data
over physical layer through any channel. They will be able to identify the physical
interpretation of mathematical expressions/modelling, while dealing with communication
systems in the presence of noise, interference and fading.
Syllabus
Introduction to Analog Communications: Amplitude modulation and demodulation,
Angle modulation and demodulation, Super heterodyne receivers.
Introduction to Pulse Modulation Systems: Basic model of digital communication
system, Pulse modulation. Sampling process, Delta modulation (DM), Adaptive Delta
modulation (ADM).
Digital Formats and Baseband Shaping for Data Transmission: ISI, Nyquist’s criterion
for distortionless baseband transmission with ideal and practical solutions, Correlative
coding, duo-binary with pre-coder, modified duo-binary.
Fundamentals of Detection and Estimation: Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure
(GSOP), MAP criterion, maximum likelihood (ML) decision rule, Correlator and Matched
filter receiver structures, ML estimation procedure.
Digital Modulation Schemes: Details about BFSK and BPSK with calculation of
probability of bit-error & symbol-error calculations for digital modulation techniques under
AWGN channel, Introduction and constellation diagram of QPSK.
Error Control Coding: Need and types of error control coding, Linear block-code:
generation and syndrome decoding, Convolutional code: Generation.
