2. Water flows upward in a vertical uniformly heated tube of length 0.9 m. The mass flux and
the inlet sub cooling are 500 kg/m2s and 0 K, respectively. The inner diameter of the tube is 25
mm. The system pressure is 10 bar. Consider subcooled heat transfer coefficient of 10 k𝑊/𝑚2𝐾.
(a) Lower limiting value for critical heat flux
(b) Upper limiting value for critical heat flux
(c) Critical heat flux and the corresponding local quality at the exit.
3. In Q. 2, with heat flux equal to the critical heat flux, determine the local heat transfer
coefficients at two locations: z = 0.4 m and 0.8 m from the inlet where the values of wall
temperature are such as 245℃ < 𝑇𝑤 < 255℃. Use the Chen correlation.
4. In Q. 2, with heat flux equal to the critical heat flux, evaluate the pressure drop across the tube
using the homogeneous model and Martinelli Model.
5. Calculate critical heat flux for the following conditions: Diameter of tube = 2.0mm, Pressure =
4 bar, Mass flux = 500 kg/m2s, Liquid = Liquid CO2, Orientation = Vertical. Find out also the
maximum and minimum possible critical heat fluxes.
6. Find the critical heat flux for the following conditions. Heat is given from the inner heated
tube (in the annulus), water is flowing upwards, pressure is 80 bar, mass flux is 1500 kg/m2s,
di = 12 mm and d0 = 8m.
7. Find the critical heat flux for following conditions (small diameter tubes) fluid is water. Given:
Mass flux = 50 kg/m2s, Dia of tube = 1.45 mm, Pressure = 10 bar, Orientation = Vertical. Find
also the possible maximum and minimum heat fluxes.
8. Water is flowing through helical coiled tubes, find the critical heat flux for the following
conditions: Mass flow rate = 600 kg/m2s, pressure = 8 MPa, inside diameter = 16 mm, thickness
= 2 mm, Coil dia = 405 mm, pitch = 33 mm and coil length = 4500 mm.
