Problems on Number System

Common Divisibility Rules:

1. Divisible by 2: The number is even (last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8).

2. Divisible by 3: The sum of the digits is divisible by 3.
3. Divisible by 4: The last two digits form a number divisible by 4.
4. Divisible by 5: The number ends in 0 or 5.
5. Divisible by 6: The number is divisible by both 2 and 3.
6. Divisible by 7: Double the last digit and subtract it from the rest of the number;
if the result is divisible by 7, so is the original number.
7. Divisible by 8: The last three digits form a number divisible by 8.
8. Divisible by 9: The sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
9. Divisible by 10: The number ends in 0.
10. Divisible by 11: The difference between the sum of digits in odd places and even
places is divisible by 11.

1. Find the smallest number divisible by both 6 and 8.

(b) 42
(c) 6
(d) 8

Solution:

 The least common multiple (LCM) of 6 and 8 is 24.

Answer: The smallest number divisible by both 6 and 8 is 24.

2. Which of the following numbers is divisible by 3: 124, 132, 145?

Solution:

 Sum of digits of 124 = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 (not divisible by 3).

 Sum of digits of 132 = 1 + 3 + 2 = 6 (divisible by 3).
 Sum of digits of 145 = 1 + 4 + 5 = 10 (not divisible by 3).
Answer: 132 is divisible by 3.

3. Find the largest 3-digit number divisible by 7.

Solution:

 Largest 3-digit number = 999.

 Divide 999 by 7: 999 ÷ 7 = 142 remainder 5.
 Subtract the remainder: 999 − 5 = 994.
Answer: The largest 3-digit number divisible by 7 is 994.

4. Is 3478 divisible by 11?

Solution:

 Odd places: 3 + 7 = 10.
