The structure of a paragraph

A paragraph is made up of three components: the topic sentence, the body,

and the concluding sentence.

Topic sentence

 It’s the first sentence in a paragraph.

 It presents the topic of the paragraph.

Supporting sentences

 It’s the main part of the paragraph.

 It provides several supporting points or arguments that explain the

controlling idea of the paragraph.

Concluding sentence

 It’s the last sentence in a paragraph.

 It restates the main idea and summarizes the supporting points.

Generating ideas for writing – brainstorming

When you are given a writing task, the first thing you should do is to think

about the topic and find ideas for your task. This activity is called

brainstorming.

Brainstorming can take many forms. You can brainstorm:

 on your own by writing down ideas on paper.

 with other people by discussing the topic.

3. The body: this is where you convey the main message or information you want

to share. Keep it concise and focused. Use short paragraphs and sentences
