Digital SAT

Introduction
December 9
General Information
The SAT is an ‘adaptive’ test…?
• The Digital SAT takes around 2 hours instead of around 3.
• The SAT is adaptive – The test changes depending on how the
candidate is doing.
• When you do well in the first module, it means you will see more
challenging questions in the second module or vice versa.
• Keep in mind that pacing can be more challenging if you move on to
the more difficult second module of a section.
What does the format look like?
• Reading and Writing Module 1
- 32 minutes, 27 questions, Standard Difficulty

• Reading and Writing Module 2

- 32 minutes, 27 questions, Adaptive Difficulty (easier or harder
depending on the first module)
How is the Digital SAT scored?
• The SAT score is broken up into two halves:
- Reading and Writing is scored from 200 to 800 points.
- Math is scored from 200 to 800 points.*

• The total SAT score is therefore between 400 and 1600 points.

! No penalty for guessing, so be sure to answer all the questions,

including fill-in ones in the Math section.*
Strategies to Follow
• Answer all the questions.

! No penalty for guessing, even on the fill-in questions on the SAT

Math.*

! Put down some number so that you have at least a chance of earning
credit.*
• Become thoroughly familiar with the testing program features.

! Download the Bluebook testing app from ‘collegeboard.org’ ahead of

time.
• Focus on understanding the question.
• Come back to questions if need be.

! Flag the question and revisit it after some time has gone by, and you
will likely notice something that you did not previously see.

! Do not look at skipping a question as a sign that you have given up.
• Write as much as you would like on the scrap paper and with the
annotation feature.

! Make notes as you read the texts, highlight important phrases in the
writing texts, and draw pictures and write out equations in the math.*

! It will help you clarify what is being asked.

• Use the full amount of time.

! There is no prize for finishing first.

• Do not look at your performance on the SAT as an all-or-nothing
situation.

! The SAT is graded on a curve, so your score is determined by how

other test-takers perform, not just some arbitrary number.

! Do not look at the SAT as something where you either do great or

poorly – a score that isn’t perfect can still be excellent.
• Try to figure things out.*

! Consider the questions as puzzles to be solved. Do not be intimidated

by a problem that you do not immediately know how to solve.
• Know that there will be one definite answer to each question.

! Do not overthink the questions because you are looking for a trick.
Instead, give the SAT the benefit of the doubt and if you do not see a
correct answer, review the texts and the questions to be sure you did
not miss anything.
• What works for one student may not work for you.

! Just because a strategy worked well for your friend does not
necessarily mean it would work well for you.

Writing for the SAT
What is tested…?
• Using correct grammar, proper wording, logical organization and
persuasive evidence will be needed when you write in academic
settings and in your future career.

• The SAT Writing tests your skills in determining which choices lead to
the highest quality essays.

• Besides your knowledge of specific grammar rules, a broad

understanding of written English will ensure you do your best in this
section.
How is the SAT Writing Structured?
• Part of the Reading and Writing section (Two modules of 27 questions
each, 32 minutes each)
• The first Reading and Writing Module will be of standard difficulty, and
the second module will be more or less difficult depending on your
performance on the first module.
• Approximately 25 of the 54 total reading and writing questions are
writing ones.
• Out of these 25 questions, about 14 relate to Standard English
conventions and about 11 relate to the expression of ideas.
! The writing questions come after the reading questions in a module.
Dos and Don’ts…
• Do use the full amount of time available.

• Take approximately 70 seconds to complete each of the writing

questions.

! Some of the writing questions may take less time than some of the
reading questions, so allocate any extra time from writing questions to
the earlier reading questions.
Dos and Don’ts…
• Don’t rush and make careless errors.

• With SAT Writing questions, it is easy to think you are doing great but
to actually make a careless mistake.

! If you are still finishing the Reading and Writing section with quite a
bit of time left, you may want to slow down to be sure you are getting
all of the needed information and you fully understand the question
that is being asked.
Example 1

! Do look at enough context.

! Don’t only consider part of a sentence.
Example 2

! Do mouth out the text as you read it.

! Don’t overly rely on intuition – know the rules.
Example 3

! Do use the choices to help you clarify your thinking.

! Don’t jump to a choice too quickly.
Example 4

! Do consider widely agreed upon grammar rules. There will be one definite answer.
! Don’t worry about stylistic preferences and pet peeves.
Example 5
Things to consider…
• Read widely.
• Write as much as you can.
• Practice writing in your daily life.
• Practice editing.
