CSEC MATHEMATICS SYLLABUS

-PAPER II-
The CSEC Mathematics syllabus is arranged in ten sections, namely:

Section 1 - Computation

Section 2 - Number Theory

Section 3 - Consumer Arithmetic

Section 4 - Sets

Section 5 - Measurement

Section 6 - Statistics

Section 7 - Algebra

Section 8 - Relations, Functions and Graphs

Section 9 - Geometry and Trigonometry

Section 10 - Vectors and Matrices

FORMAT OF THE EXAMINATIONS

Paper 2:
Section I: 90 marks

The section will consist of 8 compulsory structured and problem-solving


type questions based on the Core.

The marks allocated to the topics are:

Section II: 30 marks

This section will consist of 3 structured or problem-solving questions


based mainly on the Optional Objectives of the syllabus. There will
be 1 question from each of the Sections Algebra and Relations,
Functions and Graphs; Measurement and Geometry and Trigonometry;
and Vectors and Matrices.

Computation (Section I)

 Basic Arithmetic Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of
integers, decimals, and fractions.
 Order of Operations: BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division/Multiplication,
Addition/Subtraction).
 Percentages: Calculating percentage, percentage increase/decrease, and finding the
percentage of a number.
 Approximations: Rounding numbers to a specified number of decimal places or
significant figures.
 Scientific Notation: Expressing numbers in scientific form and performing operations
on them.
 Estimation: Approximating answers in problem-solving.

Number Theory (Section II)

 Prime Numbers: Identification, properties, and prime factorization.


 Divisibility Rules: Recognizing numbers divisible by 2, 3, 5, etc.
 LCM and GCD: Finding the least common multiple (LCM) and greatest common
divisor (GCD) of numbers.
 Integer Operations: Operations involving positive and negative integers.
 Factors and Multiples: Identifying factors, multiples, and common factors/multiples
of numbers.
 Exponents and Powers: Laws of indices, simplifying expressions with exponents.
 Rational and Irrational Numbers: Understanding the difference and their
properties.

Consumer Arithmetic (Section III)

 Simple Interest: Calculation of simple interest, principal, rate, and time.


 Compound Interest: Understanding and calculating compound interest and its
applications.
 Profit and Loss: Calculating profit, loss, and selling price; percentage profit/loss.
 Discounts and Markups: Calculating discounts, percentage discounts, and markup
prices.
 Taxes: Calculating VAT (Value Added Tax) and other forms of taxation.
 Currency Exchange: Converting between different currencies using exchange rates.
 Loans and Mortgages: Understanding basic concepts of loan repayments and interest
on loans.

Sets (Section IV)

 Set Notation: Definition of sets, elements, subsets, universal set, and empty set.
 Operations on Sets: Union, intersection, complement, and difference of sets.
 Venn Diagrams: Representing sets and operations using Venn diagrams.
 Cardinality: Determining the number of elements in a set.
 Set Identities: Working with basic set identities (e.g., De Morgan's laws, distributive
laws).
 Cartesian Product: Understanding the Cartesian product of sets and its applications.

Measurement (Section V)

 Units of Measurement: Understanding and converting between different units of


length, mass, area, volume, and time.
 Area and Perimeter: Calculating the area and perimeter of 2D shapes (e.g., triangles,
circles, rectangles).
 Volume and Surface Area: Calculating the volume and surface area of 3D objects
(e.g., cubes, cylinders, spheres, cones).
 Scale and Ratio: Working with scale drawings, maps, and ratios for measuring
quantities.
 Time and Speed: Calculations involving time, speed, and distance.
 Angles: Measurement and properties of angles, including complementary and
supplementary angles.

Statistics (Section VI)

 Data Collection: Types of data (qualitative, quantitative), sampling methods, surveys.


 Graphical Representation: Creating and interpreting bar charts, histograms, pie
charts, and line graphs.
 Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, median, mode, and their applications.
 Measures of Dispersion: Range, variance, and standard deviation.
 Probability: Basic probability concepts, calculating probabilities, and understanding
experimental vs theoretical probability.
 Cumulative Frequency: Constructing and interpreting cumulative frequency tables
and ogives.
 Correlation: Interpreting scatter plots and calculating the correlation coefficient.

Algebra (Section VII)

 Simplification: Simplifying algebraic expressions and terms.
 Linear Equations: Solving linear equations in one variable and simultaneous linear
equations.
 Quadratic Equations: Solving quadratic equations by factorization, completing the
square, and using the quadratic formula.
 Polynomials: Operations with polynomials (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division).
 Inequalities: Solving and graphing linear inequalities.
 Sequences and Series: Arithmetic and geometric progressions, finding the nth term,
and sum of terms.
 Rational Expressions: Simplifying and solving equations involving rational
expressions.

Relations, Functions, and Graphs (Section VIII)

 Relations: Definition of a relation, domain, range, and the Cartesian product.


 Functions: Definition of functions, one-to-one, onto, and many-to-one functions.
 Function Notation: Working with function notation (e.g., f(x)).
 Graphing Functions: Graphing linear, quadratic, and other basic functions (e.g., f(x)

= ax + b, f(x) = x²).
 Transformation of Graphs: Translation, reflection, and stretching of graphs.
 Inverse Functions: Understanding and finding inverse functions.
 Solving Graphically: Using graphs to solve equations and inequalities.

Geometry and Trigonometry (Section IX)

 Geometrical Figures: Properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles.


 Angles: Angle properties (e.g., interior angles of polygons, alternate angles,
corresponding angles).
 Congruence and Similarity: Criteria for congruent and similar shapes.
 Pythagoras' Theorem: Applications in right-angled triangles.
 Circle Theorems: Key theorems about circles (e.g., angles in a semicircle, cyclic
quadrilaterals).
 Trigonometric Ratios: Sine, cosine, tangent, and their applications.
 Solving Triangles: Using trigonometry to solve right-angled and non-right-angled
triangles.
 Trigonometric Identities: Fundamental identities (e.g., Pythagorean identity,
sum/difference identities).

Vectors and Matrices (Section X)
