1. Read the poems below and then answer the questions based on the poems:

Poem A: Poem B:

1.1 These poems, Poem A and Poem B, share a common theme. In no more than two
sentences, explain what common theme both poems explore.
(2 marks)
1.2 Choose one line from Poem A and one line from Poem B that best represents each poem's
message. Explain why you chose these lines and how they reflect the poems' themes.

(4 marks)
1.3 Write a paragraph in which you compare and contrast the differences in the structural features
of poems A and B. Your paragraph should identify four structural differences between the
poems, with references to and quotes from the poems to illustrate the differences you
have identified. Your discussion should also explain the effect of each difference you

identify.

1.4 Write a short paragraph in which you indicate which of the two poems you would select to
teach in a Foundation Phase class and which you would select to teach in an Intermediate
Phase class. Motivate your answer with specific references to the features of each poem.

1.5 Identify one example of figurative language from each poem (two examples in total) and
explain how each example enhances the reader’s understanding of that poem's theme.

1.6 Imagine you are teaching one of these poems, A or B, to your learners. Outline a brief pre-
reading activity to help learners engage with your selected poem’s theme before reading.
Explain why this activity would be effective.

2.1 Examine the image. Describe three visual elements that stand out and explain how these
elements relate to the themes explored in Poems A and B.

2.2 Write a short paragraph analysing how the image could be used to enhance learners’
understanding of either Poem A or Poem B. Offer specific references to the image and the
poems to substantiate your argument.

2.3 Suggest and describe a post-reading activity involving the image to help learners reflect on
the poem’s themes. Explain in a paragraph how the activity you suggest is relevant to both
the image and the poems and would assist your learners in exploring the poems through the
image.

classroom. Why is it beneficial for learners to engage with both written and visual texts?
