Additional Mathematics Notes

Quadratic Equations
Standard form: ax² + bx + c = 0

Discriminant: D = b² - 4ac

- D > 0: Two real roots

- D = 0: One real root

- D < 0: No real roots

Solving Methods:

- Factorization

- Completing the square

- Quadratic formula: x = (-b ± √(b² - 4ac)) / 2a

Functions & Graphs

Definition of a function

Domain and Range

Inverse function: If y = f(x), then x = f⁻¹(y)

Sketching graphs:

- Linear functions

- Quadratics

- Modulus functions

Differentiation
Basic Rule: d/dx(xⁿ) = nxⁿ⁻¹

Applications:

- Finding gradient of a curve

- Stationary points (max, min, point of inflection)

Second derivative test:

- f''(x) > 0: Minimum

- f''(x) < 0: Maximum

Integration
Basic Rule: ∫xⁿ dx = xⁿ⁺¹ / (n+1) + C, for n ≠ -1

Indefinite vs Definite Integrals

Area under curve: ∫ from a to b of f(x) dx

Trigonometry
Identities:

- sin²x + cos²x = 1

- tan x = sin x / cos x

Solving Trigonometric Equations

Graphs: sine, cosine, tangent

Coordinate Geometry
Distance Formula: √((x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)²)

Midpoint: ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2)

Equation of a Line: y = mx + c

Sample Questions
1. Solve x² - 5x + 6 = 0 by factorization.

2. Find the derivative of y = 3x³ - 2x² + x.

3. Integrate ∫(2x + 1) dx.
