SECTION – B (2 MARKS EACH)
10. Write all the equivalence relations on the set A = {1, 2, 3}. 11. Determine whether relation is reflexive, symmetric and transitive. Relation R in the set A = {1, 2, 3, ..., 13, 14} defined as R = {(x, y) : 3x – y = 0}. 12. Prove that the intersection of two equivalence relations on a set is an equivalence relation on the set. 2 13. Check whether the relation R in R defined by R = {(a, b) : a b3} is reflexive, symmetric or transitive.
SECTION – C (3 MARKS EACH)
14. Let A = {1, 2, 3}. Then show that the number of relations containing (1, 2) and (2, 3) which are reflexive and transitive but not symmetric is three. n +1 ,if n is odd 15. Let f : N → N be defined by f (n) = 2 for all n N . State whether the function f is n ,if n is even 2 bijective. Justify your answer.
16. Let A and B be sets. Show that f : A B → B A such that f (a, b) = (b, a) is bijective function. Or
The function f : A → B defined by f ( x) = − x 2 + 6 x − 8 is a bijection, then find A and B.
SECTION – C (4 MARKS EACH)
17. CASE BASE QUESTION Students of Grade 12, planned to plant saplings along straight lines, parallel to each other to one side of the playground ensuring that they had enough play area. Let us assume that they planted one of the rows of the saplings along the line y = x – 4. Let L be the set of all lines which are parallel on the ground and R be a relation on L. Answer the following using the above information. (A) Let relation R be defined by R = {( L1 , L2 ) : L1 || L2 where L1 , L2 L}
then show that R is an equivalence relation.
(B) Let f : R → R be defined by f ( x) = x − 4 . Then find the range of f (x). (C) Prove that the function f : R → R defined by f ( x) = x − 4 is bijective function.
SECTION – D (5 MARKS EACH)
