Determining the meanings of Idiomatic Expressions by Noting Context Clues and
Collocations

An idiom (also called idiomatic expression) is an expression, word, or phrase that

has a figurative meaning conventionally understood by native speakers. This meaning
is different from the literal meaning of the idiom's individual elements. In other words,
idioms don't mean exactly what the words say. They have, however, a hidden meaning.

Study the following idioms:

1. put their heads together – consult one another

2. set one’s face against – resist strongly

3. take a breath – pause

4. turn the tables – reverse action

5. get wind of – hear some news

6. go a long way – be sufficient

7. bear in mind – remember

8. keep a person in the dark – conceal something from someone

9. touch bottom – be in adversity

10. lay up for a rainy day – save for a future need
