CE3155B Tut1

This document outlines a tutorial for CE3155B – Structural Modelling, focusing on solving problems related to truss structures. It includes instructions to use technology for solving systems of equations involving larger matrices and provides specific tasks such as determining internal forces and reaction forces at various nodes in truss systems. The tutorial emphasizes the stiffness method and provides details on member dimensions and applied loads for calculations.

CE3155B – Structural Modelling

Tutorial 1

 Refer to Chapter 14 of Reference book by Hibbeler. Try out more problems there.
 For systems of equations involving 3X3 matrices or larger, use technology (e.g. excel)
to solve the equations. Do not waste time solving it by hand.

1) Determine the internal force of the horizontal member for the truss structure shown below.
Take A = 300mm2 and E = 200 GPa for each member.
2) The figure shows a truss system with pin support at A and roller supports at B and C.
Member AB is 2m long, with  CAB =  CBA = 45o . A horizontal load of 1kN is applied at
C. The element numbers and directions of local coordinates are given in the Figure.
Assume the same constant EA for all members.

(a) Using the stiffness method, compute the reaction at B.

(b) Compute the reaction forces at A and C without using the stiffness method.

3) The truss system shown below is pinned at nodes a and c, and roller supported at nodes
b, d and f. Point loads of magnitude P are applied at nodes d, e and f.

All members have the same axial stiffness EA. Members ae and ce are of length √2m. All
other members are 1m long.

Determine the reaction forces at node a.
