Exponential Function

Exponential functions are defined as functions where the exponents are variables and the base is a constant, following the form y = a^x with specific properties. Key properties include a domain of all real numbers, a range of positive real numbers, and a horizontal asymptote at y = 0. The document also provides examples of exponential functions, their domains, ranges, and horizontal asymptotes, along with instructions for sketching their graphs.

DEFINITION:
For each a, x ∈ ℜ, a > 0 and a ≠ 1,
𝑥
𝑦=𝑎
defines an exponential function
Exponential Function

PROPERTIES:
1. Rule of correspondence: y = ax, a > 0, a  1
2. D = {x / x  } and R = {y / y > 0}
3. If a > 1, and if x2 > x1, then y2 > y1
4. For any a > 0, the graph passes through (0, 1)
5. The horizontal asymptote is y = 0
6. The function is one-to-one function
Typical Plots of 𝑦 = 𝑎 𝑥

f(x) = ax when a >1 f(x) = ax when 0 < a < 1

h.a.: y = 0 (x-axis)
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
Y 1/8 1/4 ½ 1 2 4 8
