1. Definition
Packet Tracer is a CISCO software for building a virtual physical network and to simulate the
behavior of network protocols on this network. The user builds his network using equipment
such as routers, switches or computers. This equipment must then be connected via
connections (various cables, optical fiber). A Once all the equipment is connected, it is
possible for each of them to configure IP addresses, available services, etc.
2. General description
Figure 1 shows a general overview of Packet Tracer.
Area (1) is the part in which the network is built. The equipment is grouped in categories
accessible in zone (2).
Once the category is selected, the equipment type can be selected in area (3). Area (6)
contains a set of tools:
• Select: to move or edit equipment.
• Move Layout allows you to move the work plan.
• Place Note: Place notes on the network.
• Delete: deletes equipment or a note.
• Inspect: allows you to open an inspection window on a device (ARP table, routing)
Zone (5) allows you to add indications to the network. Finally, zone (4) allows you
to pass from real-time mode to simulation mode.
3. Build a network
To build a network, the user must choose from the 8 categories offered by Packet Trace:
routers, switches, hubs, wireless equipment, connections, so-called terminal equipment
(computers, servers), personalized equipment and finally, a multi-user connection. When a
category is selected, the user then has the choice between several different equipment. To add
equipment, simply click on it and then click on the chosen location.
Figure 2 corresponds to the area described.
To connect two devices, you must choose the category “ Connections “ then click on the
desired connection. In our various practical works, we will only use 2 kinds of connections:
straight cables (Copper Straight-Through) and crossover cables (Copper Cross-Over). They
are in positions 3 and 4 on the right side of figure 2.
• straight cables: pc to hub, pc to switch, switch to router (different layers)
• crossover cables: switch to switch, Hub to Hub, PC to PC (same layer)
4. Configuring equipment
When a computer has been added (called PC-PT in Packet Tracer), it is possible to configure
by clicking on it, once added in the network. A new window opens comprising 3 tabs:
Physical (real overview of the machine and its modules), Config (gateway, DNS and IP
address configuration) and Desktop (command line or browser Web).
In the Config tab, it is possible to configure the default gateway, as well as the address DNS
server (click the Settings button below the Global button). It is
It is also possible to configure the IP address and subnet mask (click on the FastEthernet
button below the INTERFACE button).
5. Simulation mode
Once the network is created and ready to operate, it is possible to switch to simulation mode,
which allows you to view all messages exchanged in the network. In simulation mode, the
The main window is split into two, with the right part allowing you to manage the mode
simulation: step-by-step execution, simulation speed, visible protocols. The left part Figure 4
shows the simulation part and its right part shows the details obtained in clicking on a
message (here HTTP).
6. Command Prompt
It is possible to open a command prompt on each computer on the network. It is accessible
from the third tab, called Desktop, accessible when you click on a computer for the configure
(selection mode). This tab contains a set of tools including the command prompt (Command
prompt) and a web browser.
The Command Prompt allows you to run a set of network-related commands. The list is
accessible by typing help. In particular, the ping, arp, tracert and ipconfig commands are
accessible. If Packet Tracer is in simulation mode, messages exchanged following a call to the
ping command can thus be visualized.
