Experiment 7
Integrated Circuit Timer
Objective:

To study the operation and applications of integrated circuit timer (555)

Components:

555 timer, Resistors 10k, Capacitors 0.01μF, 0.1 μF, diode 1N914, 2N2907A p-n-p
transistor

Experiment:

1. Astable multivibrator (symmetrical square wave generator)

1.1 Design an astable multivibrator with an symmetrical square wave output of 1kHz
frequency. Choose each resistor to be of 10kΩ and C= 0.1 μF. Assemble the
circuit. Use the 1N914 diode.
1.2 Measure the duty cycle, the frequency and the amplitude of the waveforms at the
Threshold and Output pins. Compare the measured values with designed values.

2. Monostable multivibrator
2.1 Design a monostable multivibrator with pulse duration of 1.1 ms. Assume
C = 0.01μF. Assemble the circuit. Apply a 200Hz trigger pulse of 0.1ms pulse
width and measure the pulse width, the frequency, and the amplitude of the output
waveform.

2.2 Repeat step 1.1 for 1 kHz trigger input and compare the measured values with
the designed values

3. Free running ramp generator

3.1 Design a free running ramp generator of the 25 kHz frequency. Assume
C = 0.1µF. Assemble the circuit. Use the 2N2907A p-n-p transistors.

3.2 Measure the frequency, TH, TL and the amplitude of the waveforms across
capacitor C, and output. Compare the measured values with the design values.

4. PSPICE Simulations

Use the macromodel of 555D IC Timer from the analog devices library in
simulation. Connect a load resistor of 100 k between the output pin of the IC
and the ground in all the circuits. The dc power supply voltage for the IC is +5V.

1. Simulate the circuit used in Astable multivibrator (unsymmetrical square wave

generator) using PSPICE. Plot and measure the duty cycle, the frequency and
the amplitude of the waveforms at the threshold and output pins.

2. Simulate the circuit used in Voltage controlled oscillator using PSPICE. Vary the
dc voltage, VCC1 from 5 V to 20 V and measure the output frequency. Draw a
plot between VCC1 and the frequency.

Quiz Questions:

1. Why I555 is popularly known as timer IC?

2. What are the difference between IC741 and IC 555

3. IC 555 is a powerful IC. Do you agree with this statement? Justify.
