MATH 1281 Written Assignment Unit 6 Edited

The assignment analyzes the relationship between calories and carbohydrates in Starbucks food items using Pearson's correlation coefficient, which is approximately 0.675, indicating a moderate positive relationship. The regression equation for predicting carbohydrates based on calories is Carb = 8.944 + 0.106 × Calories, validated by JASP with an R² value of 0.456, meaning 45.6% of the variability in carbohydrates can be explained by calories. Descriptive statistics show the mean and standard deviation for calories and carbohydrates, providing further insights into the dataset.

MATH 1281 Written Assignment Unit 6

It is natural to think there will be a relationship between the number of calories and the amount

of carbohydrates (in grams). In this journal, we will conduct a study using the nutrition data for

several Starbucks food items. Click here for the dataset (spreadsheet) or Dataset (pdf)

Import the data to JASP, run the command and take a screenshot of your output. Based on that,

answer the following questions.

Question

1. What is the correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) between the variable's calories and carb?

Answer

Based on the dataset, the correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) between calories and carb is

approximately 0.675.
2. Interpret the strength of the relationship between the calories and the amount of carbohydrates

(in grams) contained in the food menu at Starbucks.

Answer

Using this as guidelines

0.00 to 0.30: Weak

0.30 to 0.70: Moderate

0.70 to 1.00: Strong

There is a moderate positive relationship between the number of calories and the amount of

carbohydrates in Starbucks food items.

3. Using JASP descriptive statistics, find the mean and standard deviation for the variable

calories and carb

Answer

Calories: Mean = 338.831, Standard Deviation = 105.369

Carb: Mean = 44.87, Standard Deviation = 16.552

4. In a food label at Starbucks, the number of calories is indicated but the amount of

carbohydrates (in grams) is missing. Write the equation of the regression line for prediction of

the amount of carbohydrates (the response or dependent variables) given the number of calories

(explanatory variable or covariate)

First calculate the slope ( b_ 1 ).

Calculate the intercept ( b_ 0 ).

Write the regression equation.

Answer

Carb=b0 +b1 × Calories

From the JASP output:

b 1 (slope) is the coefficient for calories.

b 0(intercept) is the constant term.

Carb =8.944 + 0.106 × Calories

5. Using JASP linear regression, validate the regression equation found in c.

Answer

JASP output already validates the regression equation:

The ANOVA table shows that the model is statistically significant (p<.001), meaning there is a

significant relationship between calories and carb.

The coefficients table confirms the intercept (b0=8.944) and slope (b1 =0.106) for the regression

equation. The intercept (b0) in both equations is 8.944.The slope (b) in both equations is 0.106.

Both equations are identical.

6. Calculate R² of the regression line for predicting the amount of carbohydrates from the

number of calories and interpret it in the context of the application.

Answer

From the Model Summary table:

The R² value is 0.456.

Interpret R²

InterpreApproximately 45.6% of the variability in the amount of carbohydrates (carb) can be

explained by the number of calories in the food items.

This means that while calories are a significant predictor of carbohydrates, other factors (not

included in this model) also influence the amount of carbohydrates.
