Project Synopsis

Title:
A Comprehensive Case Study of Sarva Haryana Gramin Bank: Financial Performance and
Role in Rural Development

(i) Introduction
Sarva Haryana Gramin Bank (SHGB) is a leading Regional Rural Bank (RRB) formed in 2013
through the amalgamation of two legacy banks—Haryana Gramin Bank and Gurgaon
Gramin Bank. It operates under the sponsorship of Punjab National Bank and serves as the
backbone of rural financial infrastructure in Haryana. With over 680 branches and more
than 1,100 BCs (Business Correspondents), SHGB has played a significant role in financial
inclusion, implementation of government schemes, and support to agriculture and micro-
entrepreneurs. Given the growing importance of rural banking in economic development,
this study aims to delve into SHGB's operations, performance, and strategic approach to
fulfilling its mandate.

(ii) Rationale for the Study

The rationale for choosing this topic stems from SHGB’s pivotal role in bridging the rural-
urban financial divide in Haryana. Despite the rapid digitalization and privatization in the
banking sector, RRBs like SHGB remain essential for channeling institutional credit to rural
areas. Evaluating SHGB’s performance provides insights into how well government-backed
banking models are functioning, what challenges persist, and where policy interventions
might be necessary. Moreover, the bank's recent achievements—including zero Net NPAs
and substantial growth in net profit—make it a timely and relevant case for detailed
academic study.

(iii) Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:
- To study the financial performance of Sarva Haryana Gramin Bank over the past five years.
- To explore the role of SHGB in promoting rural development and financial inclusion in
Haryana.
- To analyze the factors affecting SHGB's operational efficiency and profitability.
- To investigate the influence of government schemes and digital initiatives on SHGB’s
service delivery.

(iv) Research Methodology

Research Design:
This study will adopt a descriptive and analytical research design. The descriptive aspect
will focus on understanding SHGB’s existing structure, performance, and initiatives, while
the analytical component will involve interpretation of financial and operational data.
